MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
OSX 10.5.4

Installed "Easy VHS to DVD for Mac" (hereafter referred to as EV2D4M) without incident. Set up Toast Basic per instructions.

On startup of the EV2D4M application I was asked for an administrator password so a device driver could be updated.

QUOTE
Administrator access is required to update a device driver for Easy VHS to DVD Capture. Type an administrator's name and password to allow Easy VHS to DVD Capture to make changes.

This is not documented, nor could I find any reference in the discussion forums or the knowledge base.

Question #1: Is it required to update the referenced device driver, and what are the ramifications vis á vis future updates to OSX? Put another way, updating something as close to the hardware as a device driver via a route other than an OS update makes me very nervous.

I hit the Cancel button and continued on to the application. Connecting up the VCR to the included Roxio adapter, the adapter to the video capture device, and the video capture device to the USB extension cable.

While I was able to view video coming from the VCR, audio was not detected. Per the documentation, I checked my cable connections, no joy.

Per this thread in the Discussion forum I tried connecting the capture device directly into the USB port on my MacBook rather than using the included USB extension cable. Joy was still not forthcoming.

Seeing references in the Discussion forum to version 1.03 of EV2D4M, I started the application and clicked on the check for updates option, downloaded and installed the update. Joy continued to elude me.

Per this thread in the Discussion forum I tried starting EV2D4M without having the capture device already connected, then connecting it when EV3D4M asked for it. Joy remained absent.

Via System Preferences/Sound/Input I was able to see that there was input detected coming in from the USB device, but EV2D4M was not showing it, i.e. the green bars did not light up and no sound was coming from the MacBook's speakers.

The sound is not muted, and the speakers work normally for other applications.

Question #2: how can I resolve my audio problems?

If a required device driver isn't available it stands to reason the device won't function properly. I'm unclear why you are not wanting to update the audio driver. There is no rewriting of existing Apple System files (Apple won't allow that). However, there can be additional files installed that add to the capabilities of the Apple files.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

I am having the same problem of receiving no sound from the VCR, however I have never gotten a request for updating drivers or anything like that. That sounds like a Windows thing to do, not a Mac thing.

Allowing the device driver update to take place appears to have solved the problem.

It would be nice if Roxio would document this behavior.

It's a device driver for our capture device, not an operating system update.
