I recently purchased Easy VHS to DVD and although it worked fine the first time I used it and I was able to burn two DVDs, now I am getting the "unknown capture error" message when I get to the point of selecting the video recorder to record from. I've tried downloading the  RoxioC2009USBCaptureDriver.zip as suggested in the support pages, and I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software. I'm trying to tape my own videos - taped from tv, not purchased - so it's not a copyright issue. My system is a Dell Inspiron 1535, Intel® Core ™ 2 Duo CPU, T5850 @ 2.16 GHz, 2.17 GHz, 4 GBs ram, 32 bit operating system. I would appreciate any suggestions - I'm at the end of my rope and really starting to regret this purchase!

Selecting the Video Recorder??? You can’t. You select the USB 2861 Device.

Have you applied SP2?

Lastly, try another source – DVD Player, TV, camcorder.

Yes, I selected the USB device which was connected to the VCR. What is SP2?? And I'm not sure what you mean by trying another source - I'm trying to burn old VHS tapes to DVD, via the USB connection between the VHS and my computer. Which is the whole point of the Easy VHS to DVD thing, and I kind of expected to it be, well, easy.. At least not impossible. And since it did work fine the first time I used it, I'm really baffled as to why it won't work now, with the exact same set up.

Well… it is easy but you have to lift a finger to help troubleshoot your problems.

“Other Sources”? – how about the 3, I listed?

SP2 = Service Pack Number 2. See the pinned post at the top with the details and a link.

Now, see, the replies I saw from you to other people with problems were exactly why I waited quite some time to ask for help. The sarcasm and condescending attitude just annoys me even more. I've been struggling with this problem for days on my own, and hoped I could figure it out myself, so haven't exactly been sitting around waiting for someone else to do it for me.

I don't have a camcorder that plays full-size VHS tapes, so that's out. I'll check into the service pack 2 link, but I've about decided to just buy another DVD/VHS combo and use that. I was hoping this product would be useful for downloading video to my iPod, since it claims to be, but that's another issue for another day as there are apparently no instructions at all for that one, with the possible exception of instructions that are buried like Bluebeard's gold on this site. But whatever, I'll either get it working, return it if that's even possible, or chalk it up as a learning experience in which I learn to check out a product's reviews and forum posts before I spend money on it.

You are reading more into it than was intended. Stating or restating the obvious is not sarcasm… Certainly none was intended.

I appreciate that you are frustrated but don’t let that blind you. The other sources I suggest are to test your install as well as the device.

Next we would move into your Install and Hardware – testing follows a logical path.

Actually you have one of the simplest and feature laden products out the, but if you think you want something else, that is up to you.

If you change your mind, we will be happy to continue this.

What's obvious for you, as someone who apparently has lots of experience with installing programs, isn't necessarily obvious to those of us having problems. It it was, we wouldn't be trying to find some help.

Are you saying to try recording from another source? I can try recording from the DVD player. I'll also check out the SP2.

I've actually been very pleased with the VCR/DVD combo, but the DVD part recently died. And it doesn't have all the nifty features of Roxio's product, especially if I can get those nifty features to work.
