I bought roxio creator 2009 ultimate and it seems to work fine for smaller files. But anyways, I tried to convert and burn video files that are from 1.3 to 1.6 gigs (before converting) and they show as having 4.6 or so gigs long after they are converted. Is it true that "fit to disk" will actually chop off some of the movie at the end or credits to make enough space for the whole disk? If so, is there a way to edit "fit to disk" so it doesn't chop off the last couple minutes of the movie (without having to choose a lower quality burn such as lp). The movies tend to be under 2 hours long, so I'm really not sure what is going on.

No its not true that "fit-to-disc" will chop off any of the video to fit on the disc. I don't know where you got that idea. unsure.gif
First of all forget all about file sizes when doing video. The important parameter is the time length of your video. A standard 4.7GB DVD will hold 60 minutes of video at best quality. Any longer and the video has to be compressed to fit on the DVD with a resulting loss of quality. "Fit-to-disc" tries to do this compression but it does a very poor job with low quality.
Another method is to burn your movie to an iso file (uncheck burn to disc and check create image file) using myDVD. After the iso file has been created, use Video Copy & Convert to burn the iso file to a DVD. VCC does a good job of transocing the overlong video to fit on the DVD.

BTW, no Roxio program will copy/convert any commercial DVD

You just learned that File Size is meaningless in Video…

Fit to disc doesn’t work like that at all!!! I simply selects the one that will let the LENGTH of your Project fit on the disc you are using:

4.7Gb
HQ = 1:06
SP = 1:37
LP = 2:22
ELP = 3:04

8.5 Gb:
HQ = 2:00
SP = 2:57
LP = 4:19
ELP = 5:35

These are old public domain movies from karagarga.net.  they are old not so well known movies from the 30's through the 60's.  So then why is the the last couple minutes missing sometimes on a larger file (when those last couple minutes are there when you preview the movies on a media player like winamp) when converted from AVI to be played on a dvd player when burned with the "fit to disk" setting.
i believe they are being coverted from avi to mpeg-2. (so they play in any regular newer dvd player.) i could be wrong. (whatever it automatically coverts a file to, so that it plays on a dvd player.)

There are a few things that can cause that but you may have been focusing in the wrong area…

One easy  check – in MyDVD go to Edit Chapters (right click on the menu button for the movie)

Note the Duration value then slide the scrubber to the end and see what position reads. You may have to drag it close and finish by clicking on Play.

(Ignore the red arrows in this screen cap, it was for something not related)

Do Position and Duration match and look right in the preview?

LP is now my friend. Why does roxio have "fit to disk" if it doesn't work properly? It seemed like "fit to disk" worked properly until a month after buying roxio, then it totally cratered. Do they plan to fix it in the future?

ohmy.gif  It worked properly for you and then it stopped.  I don't see how it can be a bug. (With bug defined as no one is able to use it properly at any time.)  What did you change/update/install?  Windows security update?   Use Windows restore to go back to where it was working.  Make one change at a time and test to see if it is still working.   You will eventually find what has screwed up your computer so the program doesn't run properly.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
