How do I edit a flash file?

I'm in Videowave Advanced Edit and I try to add videos that I downloaded from You Tube. I use Real Player to download.
The files that are MPEG-4 show up but flash videos do not. The Real Player downloader does not give an option to choose a format. From what I see, most are flash.

How can I get Videowave to recognize flash files that I can edit and save?

.FLV is not a supported format. You will need to convert into a standard format like mpeg2 before you can use it in Videowave.

One can't convert them with Roxio software.

Do an internet search for ".flv converters". I just did a Google search and got over 19 million results, it told me.
There seem to be a lot of free converters in there as well as retail ones.

Real Player? First, I would find anything, but Real Player to do anything.

You mentioned MPEG-4, but when you download, what format does Real Player use for what you say are flash files? Are they really .flv files? There have been some assumptions made here, which are probably correct, but when I see that Real Player is being used, I tend to think more about proprietary files created by that junk program.

You may have to find a program that will convert the Real Player format files to a useful format.

A Real Player tech told me that it downloads whatever format the person used to upload his You Tube video. I use Roxio's MPEG format to upload my videos to You Tube. My Real Player downloads say either flv. or mpeg-4 in the info box under the video thumbnail.

The tech also said Real Player will convert a flash file to an MPEG-4 in its converter window. I looked and could not find a mpeg format choice.

I would gladly use another program to download You Tube videos which would also convert them. Know of any?

Use "Any Video Converter" to do the conversion.
