My operating system is Windows XP SP2

I recently had to re-install my operating system due to a virus and the Sonic DLA program is no longer in the Windows Add/Remove program feature. But, there are two Sonic folders on my system.

C:\Program Files\Sonic\DLA (there are 31 files in this folder)

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager (there are 10 files in this folder)

The program cannot be re-installed from any of the files in the folders I listed. I would like to delete all trace elements of the previously installed Sonic DLA so that I can do a clean re-install.

I can easily delete the folder “C:\Program Files\Sonic\DLA”

But, when I try to delete the folder “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager” I receive a warning message that states, “Renaming, moving or deleting ‘Update Manger’ could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this?

Is there a file in “\Sonic\Update Manager” that I should be aware of which could cause problems in other parts of my system if I delete this folder? or is there a program which would remove all of the trace elements of the Sonic DLA program?

I would appreciate any help you can provide

From the way you're talking it looks as if DLA was the only Sonic program on your system, and it is already not working.
If that's the case I would delete both folders including the Sonic folders.

If you're feeling uncertain, rename both Sonic folders to 'OldSonic' and use the system for a while. That's equivalent to deleting them, but if there are any untoward effects you can rename the folders back again and you're no worse off than you are now.

There are other programs on my system and they are working fine. The Sonic DLA files in the Common Files folder could have come from my back-up disk. The folders and files on the back-up disk, which were free of any virus, were re-installed after the re-format was complete.

The folder is "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager"

All ten files in this folder are Sonic files

My question is why to a get a warning message “Renaming, moving or deleting ‘Update Manger’ could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this? when the Sonic DLA program is not installed.

My knowledge of the deep workings of a computer is limited and I don't to delete a folder which will have adverse effects. But, I want to ride the system of any traces of the previously installed Sonic DLA program before I re-install it.

That wasn't what I asked.

If there are no other SONIC/ROXIO programs on your computer, you can just delete the indicated folders.

OR

If you really want Sonic DLA on your system, [which most of the users here wouldn't advise unless you're an expert and know what precautions to take when using it], and are worried about deleting those folders then just go ahead and reinstall over the top of them.

I do not have any other Sonic/Roxio programs on my PC

Is it safe to delete the sonic folder even with the warning message?

Which program would be best to replace Sonic DLA?
I only need to save music, photo and data files (word, excel, etc.)

If all you are saving is "music, photo and data files" there is good news - WinXP can save them to CD.  WinXP is the first Version of Windows that doesn't need a 3rd-party burning application.

WinXP burns in sessions, and will create a much more stable, reliable burn than Packet-writing (Sonic DLA, Roxio Drag2Disc and DirectCD, Nero's InCD, etc).  Packet Writing programs are incompatible with each other, and often with different Versions of the same program.

Hello Lynn, So I do not need another 3rd party software ?

I have the following drive on my Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows XP: Sony CDRW/DVD CRX330E

I use my PC for storing data (word, excel, etc) as well as playing music and watching DVD's using PowerDVD. I only have the need for backing up data on a CD. I am currently using a Sandisk Cruzer flash drive for backing up files but would also like to back them up on a CD. I also want to create a music CD from my music files to play in my car

I like to keep things simple as far as software goes and don't want a lot of different programs. From what I have read the Nero and Roxio programs are large and take up alot of hard disk space. They are also probably filled with applications that I will never use.

Going back to my original question, I recently had to re-install my operating system due to a virus. Before this I had Sonic DLA and RecordNow programs on my PC. These programs were no longer in the Windows Add/Remove program feature after the restore. But, there is still a Sonic folder on my system under "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager"

All ten files in this folder are Sonic files. I was able to remove all of the RecordNow files in another folder

My question is why to a get a warning message “Renaming, moving or deleting ‘Update Manger’ could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this? when the Sonic DLA program is not installed. Is the Sonic file in anyway involved with recording on my CDRW/DVD Drive?

You can use XP for  your data, just go into your Help and Support (click on Start then Help and Support and type in....make a cd).

For music (click on Start, then Help and Support and type in.... Windows Media Player) and do some reading.

Using the above is basic data/music creating,  but from what you have told us that is ALL you need, try it. It does not have all the bells and whistles that Roxio/Sonic has.

Thank you for the information about using the XP system for recording data to CD's

I would still like to remove the Sonic Update Manager folder (the only folder left on my system pertaining to Sonic) It is located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager (there are 10 files in this folder)

but I am receiving an error message that states:

“Renaming, moving or deleting ‘Update Manger’ could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this?"

I do not have any other Sonic/Roxio programs on my system. Is the Sonic file in anyway involved with recording on my CDRW/DVD Drive?

No

Have you tried in your Add/Remove Programs to see if its there?

If its not there then try this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;290301

I went to the link you provided at Microsoft for the "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" and ran the program. It uninstalled the cleanup utility that was already on my PC. Now I need to find out how to reinstall it

There is no program in my add/delete program feature for Sonic DLA or any other Sonic or Roxio program. But there is a folder in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager"

As I said before, it does not seem to have any legitimate use but I receive the pop-up message:

"Renaming, moving or deleting 'Update Manger' could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this?"

when I try to delete the folder

I'm not sure how many times you want to be told, but DELETE THE FOLDER! smile.gif
