Hi all.  I am relatively new to this program so please bear with me.  I have 25 movies in WMV format which combined total 1.8 gigs.  I want to burn them to DVD and be able to play them on a regular home DVD player, and not just in windows media player on a computer.  Do I have to convert these to VOB's for that to work?

I tried creating a DVD project with these 25 files both with and without DVD menus and the project was huge, like 15 gigs, even though the total of the 25 movies is only 1.8 gigs.  Any idea why that happens, even when I chose WITHOUT menus (which I assume that menus eat up alot of space)

Time is more of a factor than size but the reason the file size increases is the the WMV files must be made dvd compliant for them to work in a standard dvd player.  This takes time and will increase the size but it does seem like the increase is rather large.
How long is the playing time for the 25 movies?

Ahhhh Haaa, so that makes perfect sense then, TIME is the culprit in this case.  Thanks for that detailed break down Jim, MUCH appreciated...

If I were to convert these into VOB files, would that help at all???

Also, if I burn WMV files onto a DVD, would they play in a regular home DVD player, or just in windows media player on a computer?

The times Jim shows are for DVD compliant files which means IFI,BUP and VOB.
WMV files will not play on stand-alone DVD players they have to be converted to DVD compliant format as has been staed in this thread.

Ok, great.  Is there a converter in Roxio Creator 2009???

If not, is there a good freeware one out there that would be good/easy for a newbie like me to use????

You would use Creators 2009 myDVD or Video Copy & Convert to create a DVD from the wmv files that you can play on your stand alone player. You may be able to put a few wmvs on one DVD but try to keep the time length on the DVD to 60 minutes otherwise there is considerable loss of quality. Use RW DVDs for doing a couple of tests

Does your TV DVD player play DivX files?  If so, you can convert the files to DivX and burn them to a disc as data files.  Read up on DivX and Xvid.  I don't know how much you can get on a disc but if I remember it was somewhere approaching ??  More than 10.  With disc so cheap now, it makes no sense to try to squeeze all that video on one disc.  One little scratch .....

Supported file formats.

Now if are are talking High Definition and Blue Ray burner and player then that is a different matter.  Remember that if any of those files are DRM protected (copyright) that you can't burn them anyway.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Awesome Walt, thanks SOOOO much for the info.  These videos I am making are for american sign language, so there is no audio in them persay, so is there an option for me to not copy audio and have more room that way also???

Do you recommend one over the other, the mydvd or copy/convert for what I am trying to do???  Is there a "faster" way to do this or is encoding always a longgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg process???
