Don't know. What other burning software do you have installed? What part of Roxio 8 crashes your computer? What are you doing when it crashes? What do you have running in the background?

Could you be more specific on what you're doing when the system crashes....any error messages?
Also, what, if any, other similar software is installed on your system such as Sonic DLA or Nero InCD?
It's really hard to guess without some info.

Well, so far, you haven't really answered any of our questions, so it is tough to help.

Don't double post; just add to the original! The other board (general) is for non-Roxio discussions only. Take time to fully read and reply to posts. Last time I saw this, it was a hard drive going bad but just in case, do you have IE6 or better on your computer, DirectX 9© Latest?and have you updated all your computer drivers?

What is the make/model of your video card or chip?

I am glad that you are up and running now. Updating drivers, especially for video cards, is a must with this program.

For those of us who can always use the help:

1. If we purchase an off-the-shelf computer, especially a laptop, how do we find out what drivers we have, and where to find the updates?

2. How do we reduce the amount of unnecessary stuff that starts and runs in the background. The startup folder is simple enough, but Task Manager shows a million things, none of which I have any idea of the necessity or otherwise of.

1) Most major brands of computers have a home page that in turn links to a download page with drivers. You can look at those.

In Windows, select My Computer and right click to get properties. Select hardware/device manager. Select (for instance) display adapters and then right click on your listed adapter. Select properties and then driver. The driver date and version is listed. Always make sure you have selected the correct driver for your device and that you follow the instructions . Some driver updates require that you remove the old drivers via add/remove programs; other do it automatically. READ all the information about the drivers on the drivers site. In most cases, you can roll back the driver to an earlier version from the driver properties window on your computer.

Firmware for burners is about the same but in this case, if you don't follow the instructions exactly, you have made yourself a door stop. The old carpenters adage comes to mind " Measure twice, cut once).

2) The easiest way is to run msconfig from your start run menu, select start up and unselect the ones you do not want. You will have to shut down after doing this and when you restart, you will get a message abut partial start up, simply acknowledge it and check don't show me again.

Some system helper programs also can do this. One such is System Mechanic. It has a menu item that will do that.

Which ones? There are two ways, if you go to PCPitstop and run the test on your computer you will learn a lot. You can test anonymously. When the test is completed, you will get a list of running processes and a little about them. You can chose to disable the ones you do not want.

Also for general information, if you go to here , you can find what each of the running Windows processes are (most of them).

I think I covered most if not all of what you asked.
