I have a (like new) Sony Digital Still Camera M#MVC-CD1000 which was given to me by my son. It has the software - Mavica SPVD-001 with USB driver Ver. 1.5. Also MGI PhotoSuite Ver. 8.0. This software works fine with Windows 98 but I have Windows XP and it conflicts with this OS. I need to know what to do to upgrade the software so I can get my pictures from the camera CD to my computer without having to finalize the disk. Thanks for any help there is out there as I can't seem to find anything from Sony or Roxio. LL

From Steve's Digicams:
Once you take a picture and it's stored on the disc it cannot be erased. This isn't much of a problem considering the high capacity and low cost of the discs. Just be careful what you photograph, consider it to be forever!
The CD-R discs are like multi-session CD-R drive in a desktop computer. If you want to read the disc outside of the camera the open session must be "finalized" first. This consumes available disc space (~13.5MB) each time you close it. You can initialize and finalize discs until all of the space is consumed.
Option: If you have a fairly new CD-R or CD-RW you may be able to read the "unfinalized" Sony discs if you install Adaptec's DirectCD software which is supplied with the camera accessories. Or you can download image data to your computer using the new USB port without finalizing the disc first.
Plug the camera into a USB port on your computer and it should recognize that it is connected. You should then be able to copy the files from the CD to a folder on your hard drive using Windows. This may not work with any videos that you have on the disc.
If that like new camera doesn't have a USB port, then you have to get a copy of Adaptec's Direct CD or finalize the disc. Remember by finalizing, you do not render the disc unusable, just that you lose 13.5 MB by finqalizing and initializing. (There may be a reason why your son gave you that camera
The next question you'll have is where is the USB port. On that camera, it is here:

Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
