Media Manager 5 is suddenly driving me crazy with installing loop

I have a Blackberry 8100 and have been using Media Manager 5 with no problems. Then all of a sudden EVERY TIME I boot my computer, it starts some kind of install loop, as if trying to reinstall itself, with the Windows XP installer.

I've read many other threads on this problem, dating back YEARS but none of the advice works.

I cant uninstall it because the install is running constantly, and I cant shut down the install, no way in the world.

If I try to uninstall, it just tells me there's another install program running and it cant.

I even took one tip from another thread and tried shutting down the Windows Installer, disabling it, and restarting, but it kept flashing boxes on my screen as it keeps trying to start the thing!

How do I get rid of this mess now?!

I like the program but it's making me crazy with this now!

I dont know if it's relevant but I also have Easy Creator 10 on this computer.

That behavior would suggest that the Microsoft Installer has got its knickers in a knot. I would suggest that you need to straighten it out with the Microsoft Installer CleanUp Utility MSICUU2.exe

Read that Microsoft page carefully. It could be just what you need.

Oh I tried that too, didn't work.

I dont even know WHY it's doing this, it was already installed.

It says; The feature you are trying to use is on a network source that is unavailable. ( it's looking for Roxio Media Manager.msi )

If I click Cancel, I get; Error 1706 No valid source could be found for product Roxio Media Manager.

I click ok and it starts all over again, in an endless loop trying to install it, even though it's already installed.

Uninstall the Media Manager completely.
Use the MS Installer cleanup to remove all reference to the Media Manager program.

Then, once your system is back to normal, reinstall the Media Manager if you want to.

It wont let me uninstall anything while this stupid loop is running, it tells me another installer is running.

It's insane.

Why wont Roxio fix this?

If it worked for you, and now it doesn't work for you, it looks like you introduced something, into your computer, that is causing the problem. It is doubtful that Roxio can fix your computer, YOU have to. wink.gif

The uninstall is working again now, apparently I just had to allow some time for the installer to go dormant so I could uninstall.

But no, my computer works fine. If you google this problem you'll find a lot of people have been having it for years now, with no explanation and they keep asking why Roxio doesnt fix the bug, but no one knows a good working solution for it.

You know, I'm wondering if it is because there's a version of it inside Easy Creator 10?

I took a look and it requires some menu digging but it looks like essentially the same program in there.

I wonder if they conflict when both are installed?

But I did finally get Media Manager 5 uninstalled, thanks.

Sonic have been 'dicing and slicing' their core software for some time now, selling different-shaped pieces of the same pie as different products.

Easy VHS to DVD can't be installed with the Creator line of software because it already contains parts of Creator. and there are other examples too. I would not be surprised to find that the Blackberry Media Manager 5 is a sub-set of the Creator line of products and should not be installed with them.

It would be nice if they published a warning notice saying which products should be kept separate.

I think I got to the root of this tonight. I tried yet again, to install MM 5. It went fine, then said it needed to reboot. This time instead of rebooting later, I did it then. When it booted again, I get this message saying my system recovered from a serious error. It went to the Microsoft page and said my video driver had crashed because the one that Blackberry just installed was not compatible with my video card. Ahah!

My system is 2001 vintage and has an old ATI All In Wonder with NO recent drivers available for it, it's considered an "End of Life product".

SO this may explain why Media Manager was trying to install again, every time I booted my computer.

What it doesnt explain is why the heck Blackberry finds the need to replace my video driver after ALL this time. I mean it's working! If it works, dont fix it! What's the point???

Anyway, I uninstalled MM 5 again, and will wait until I get a newer computer.

It looks like Post #6 of this thread was spot on. You have an antique computer, fit for the museum.

Your first problem was trying to use newer software with a computer that was not up to snuff.

Your second problem was coming into these forums, crying about the problems with the software, and not letting anyone know that you had a boat anchor for a computer.

Don't feel bad, though. There are many folks who don't realize that their computers can't run newer software. Hopefully, you won't have problems, once you build a new computer.

I don't have an antique computer and don't have a clue where this task/process/demon came from. I assume it's from my blackberry Storm* software. I can find the icon in "control panel", labeled "software updates" but I can't find anyplace that will unistall it for me, and I have also gotten the "another installation is already in progress" message several times. I'm lost.

Do Roxio folks ever help out on this forum? It appears that this bug has been evident for a while.

Apparently, what you have is a bundled product Roxio MM with Blackberry Desktop Software. In event of any software corruption or unsuccessful installation, Windows installer service will try to fix the affected product, in this case its Roxio MM. This is not a bug and is a expected behavior in such circumstances of failure. If you donot use the Roxio MM part of the Blackberry desktop software, you could download the version without Roxio MM.

Hey, no need to insult me and my computer. Yes it's a 2001, but it runs everything else just fine. It's an AMD 1.4Ghz. The video driver is the weakest link, I'll admit, but WHY does Roxio need to replace my video driver anyway, when no one else does? That's the question I'd ask. It IS running all kinds of "modern" software by the way.

I solved the problem by just switching my Blackberry to storing photos on the SD card instead of in memory, so it's an easy task just to see it as a storage device now, take the photos, and I dont need MM anymore for that.

I "re-downloaded" the "Blackberry Desktop Software"* but the problem still exists. I didn't see where I could download the software WITHOUT RoxioMM and, anyway, I WOULD like the option of using Roxio MM on this computer in the future.

Melissa, I was just quoting the other post, in regards to "antique", for a comparison. What's the meaning of "antique" or "obsolete", anyway. I believe my Storm was "obsolete" before it was released. And, yes, I was STUPID to get it, to be locked into a 2 year contract, and to return it within the 30day "trial" period (but I was busy, and I figured the learning curve would take a while not that the software/hardware was just a piece of garbage.) Now, they say there is a "Storm II" coming. First there was the "Storm", now is it going to be "the Perfect Storm" that we REALLY don't want to get caught in?

I have re-registered as "alterego" because I could not figure out, after MANY MANY tries, how to sign in again. (Yes, I did try to have them send me my password but it wouldn't take any of the user names I might have used).

I will ask, once again, isn't there a comprehensive user manual for the Storm?

With the Blaxckberry OEM version, it's very spcifically tied to that piece of hardawre and support HAS to come from Blackberry really.

The users here are just users - and you need someone who HAS a blackberry to advise you.

As for 'obsolete' or 'antique' computers - EMC does use the graphics chipset for rendering - hence the driver problem and also the failure of older graphics cards to cope - especially motherboards wth built in gaphics

Software Corporations have taken the idea of "plausible deniability" too far. Now, everyone seems to be a corporately philanthropic volunteer that has no ties to the actual corporation and, therefore, the corporation has no responsibility/accountability/direct(officially) connection. I don't blame the volunteers (other than their complicity in the plausible deniability), and thank them for their efforts (the "kudos" thing feels like being asked to tip at Subway), but it's a little strange and opaque.

If Roxio Media Manager WORKS on my blackberry desktop manager, wouldn't that indicate that something ELSE is wrong? Can it be a working application and still try to install itself?
