Hi all,

Sorry if this topic has been solved elsewhere - I didn't find the answer via search.  Anyway, here's the problem: WMP, Quicktime, and any other media player don't play video anymore.  That's it.  I won't get into my long and painful install / uninstall / reinstall (following the tips and hints here, thanks everyone!) exercises, but suffice it to say that, with Creator 2009 installed or (completely) uninstalled, I can't watch video.

I'm running XP SP3 on a 3.0Mhz Core 2 Duo with 2MB of 1066MHz DDR2 RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT GPU 512MB, so I'm certainly sufficient on the hardware side.  Previous to my first install of Creator, I was able to watch all varieties of video including the problematic MOD files from my Panasonic videocam.  Now I can't watch most video through Roxio, and none at all through other media players.  I've even uninstalled Roxio thoroughly and still can't watch.  I rolled my WMP player back to 9.5 and any video it plays looks like a scrambled cable signal.  The audio comes through but no video.

This has only happened since the installation and uninstall / reinstall / reuninstall, etc. of Roxio.  Any advice is certainly appreciated.

Try the free VLC Media Player and let us know if that works for you.  I think there might be a codec problem on your system.

Also download and run gspot on those videos.  It will tell you if the right codecs are installed.

(I'm sure beerman intended to link to that codec information applicance)
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Thanks Beerman and sknis,
I downloaded and installed both of your suggested programs.  Gspot says the codecs are good, and VLC has the same reaction as any other media player: the audio plays, but the video does not, and in fact the whole screen blinks randomly.  Again, no changes have been made other than installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling and uninstalling, etc.) the Creator Suite.

Argh!

Sounds like corrupted codecs.  You might try uninstalling then reinstalling the codecs.
Will a simple mpeg file play ok?

Thanks for the suggestion.
I deleted ALL codecs, tried to play a mpeg video - the screen freaked out.

I installed divx codecs, rebooted, tried to play a mpeg video - the screen freaked out.

Installed k-lite full codecs, rebooted, tried to play a mpeg video and, surprise, the screen freaked out.

Wow, this is frustrating.  And all since I tried out Roxio.

The strange thing is that you say even uninstalled you can't play most files.....is that still correct?  If you uninstall Roxio completely and use the codecs you used, you still get no luck?
Have you updated DirectX as well as your video card drivers?

Yes sir - I can't get any video files to play, with Roxio uninstalled.  I refreshed mobo and vid card drivers, also tried rolling back vid card drivers.  Still no luck, and no video.  Of course, I can't necessarily say that Roxio has caused all this, but seems more than a coincidence that the video issue came up immediately after the suite installation.  FWIW, I keep my virus database updated too.  I'd really hate to have to reinstall the OS.

Try a Windows System Restore to before you installed the Roxio product.
