I have a question regarding the format that is burned on an Bluray disc. I am using Creator 2010, and it appears you have two options to burn in HD format - Bluray or AVCHD.  Is there a universal bluray format, or does the bluray option just mean that Roxio will burn the AVCHD format on a bluray disc.

I am questioning this as I wasn't sure if it would be better to purchase a bluray burner to burn bluray discs that will play in all bluray players or if I still have to be concerned with whether someone's bluray player will accept the format that Roxio uses to burn HD content. If it is not AVCHD, what is the name of the format that Roxio burns HD video onto bluray discs?

Roxio burns both the format based on industry standard. What this means is that the format referred to is not proprietary. As long as you have player that supports the format, you should be good. Check this out.

Hi Firenhancer,

Thank you for your fast response. I am sorry, but I am not sure I understood your reply. Are you saying that the only HD format that Roxio burns is AVCHD and that is the format I am to be sure the bluray players can play? Is the AVCHD format just for DVDs - if so, what is the format for blurays?

Or are you saying that there is only one format for bluray discs and that there is no name for it.

Also, is there just one kind of media disc for blurays (- or +). Or is there a +Bluray disc and a -Bluray disc like you have in DVDs, and that we would have to be sure that player plays the + or - bluray disc.

Thanks, again, for all your help.

As Gary pointed out, a google search for AVCHD and Bluray will get you several links with explanation of these formats. Here is little excerpt from Wikipedia

AVCHD - AVCHD is a format for the recording and playback of high definition video. AVCHD has been designed to be compatible with Blu-ray Disc format[1] and can be used for authoring and distribution of high definition video, though with reduced quality and interactivity compared to Blu-ray Disc

Bluray - Blu-ray Disc (also known as Blu-ray or BD) is an optical disc storage medium designed to supersede the standard DVD format. Its main uses are for storing high-definition video, PlayStation 3 games, and other data, with up to 25 GB per single layered, and 50 GB per dual layered disc.

GGRussell and Firenhancer,

Thank you for your advice. I did check on line and was able to find a lot of information regarding bluray discs, and I understand that a bluray disc is just a media that can hold a lot of information (25-50 gb), whether it is a HD video or regular standard files, photos, etc. And it looks like there are three kinds of bluray discs: BD-R, BE and a BL (a standard disc, a rewritable disc, and a dual layer disc).

It also looks like, when you are using Video Wave to create a video, the only HD format that Roxio's MyDVD can burn it in is AVCHD. The only other way I think that Roxio can burn another HD format to disc is if it was an .iso file and disc copier then would burn it to disc. Then I could use Roxio to burn a hd wmv or an H.264 high definition file.

If the above information is correct, I think I finally got it. If it isn't, please let me know where I am wrong.

I think I understand what is going on here. What version of Creator 2010 do you have? In order to create Bluray format under MyDVD (High-definition video with up to 1920×1080 pixel resolution at up to 60 frames per second interlaced or 24 frames per second progressive), you will either require Bluray plugin or own Creator 2010 Pro to author to a Bluray media. On the other hand, it is said that AVCHD format is to be compatible to Bluray format is slightly reduced quality. In this case, you can have Bluray quality on DVD media resulting on limited length of video vs using Bluray format on BD media.

Firenhancer,

I have Creator 2010 Pro.  I guess I am really not making sense, and I am sorry for that. All I wanted to know, is that when you create a project through Video Wave, and want to burn it in HD format, what choices do I have. I see two choices under HD format when you get to MyDVD: AVCHD and Bluray. My question is, when you choose Bluray, is the HD format that is burned still AVCHD or is it another format like H.264 or HD WMV, or is it some other format?

Here were the outputs for Videowave 2009 and I assume Videowave 2010 is the same:
AVCHD 1080i = 1920X1080@4.88Mbps 24fps
AVCHD 720p = 1280x720@4.88Mbps 24fps

Bluray AVC EP = 1280x720@6.84Mbps 24fps
Bluray AVC HQ = 1280x720@14.65Mbps 24fps
Bluray AVC LP (NTSC) = 1440x1080@9.77Mbps, interlaced
Bluray AVC SP (NTSC) = 1920X1080@11.72Mbps, interlaced

Bluray EP = 1280x720@15Mbps 24fps
Bluray HQ = 1920x1080@30Mbps 24fps
Bluray LP (NTSC) = 1440X1080@20Mbps, interlaced
Bluray SP (NTSC) = 1920X1080@25Mbps, interlaced

I can only assume those not labeled interlaced are rendered as progressive.  The last 4 are MPEG 2.  A Bluray disc can be either AVC or MPEG 2.  Audio can be AC3 or AAC.  Not sure if it supports MPG or PCM audio.

As for MyDVD output, you can set that in Project Settings under Default Encoding Settings.  AVCHD or MPEG2 HD.

The big point you are missing is that you don’t need to know any of this…

The only time format matters is when you burn! And the only time you burn is in MyDVD.

In MyDVD you pick your Project type. That and that alone determines what gets burned!

MyDVD___New_Project.jpg

You can tweak some of the settings under Project Settings (DVD shown):

MyDVD___Project_Settings__dvd_.jpg

New in 2010 is the option to burn one type of project and switch to another and burn in that!!!

MyDVD___Chg_Project_Type.jpg
(AVCHD is grayed out because it is the current project)

But MyDVD could care less what you feed it! You can add BD clips, mpeg1, mpeg2, DivX, MOV, nearly all video formats. It will convert and render them into the format required for the Project Type that you have chosen.

VideoWave is an editor and for the most part you simply Save the Project and add that dmsm file into MyDVD.

That dmsm file does not contain one single frame of video but MyDVD will load everything used in that VW Project and apply all edits and special things you added.

There is a post about Workflow and Strategy, Here. While I have not updated it for BD or AVCHD, it still applies.

Kelly, do you have a blu-ray burner?

It would be real helpful if you post your computer specs in your signature via MyControls at the top of the page.  If I remember, you do have more than one computer so information on a couple of the most used computers would be good.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Jim,

Thank you for taking the time to help me and for showing me exactly where items are. I agree that it is what I do in MyDVD that dictates what gets burned. I also saw that you can change the project type from DVD to Bluray (that's great). The reason why I asked what formats I could burn HD video is because I did not realize that the bluray player I had did not play AVCHD video. I thought there was only one HD format. Now I see there are several (AVCHD, H.264 (which is also MPEG-4/AVC), AVC-Intra, WMV HD, Apple ProRes - and I am sure that's not all). So I thought it would be good to know the formats that Roxio can burn. I do a lot of family and friends vacation, birthdays, weddings, etc. videos and some of them are now branching into bluray players and so I want to know what formats I can burn in, just in case they can't play a certain format. It would be nice if there was one format that would play in all bluray players. I will look at your workflow and strategy. I can use all the help I can get.

Sknis,

I don't have a bluray burner at this time. I took your suggestion and put my computer specs in my signature. Thanks.  smile.gif

I would think that MPEG 2 would be a good bet. I'm a bit surprised that your Bluray doesn't play AVCHD.  Are you refering to AVCHD on DVD?  Or a Bluray disc that is encoded to AVCHD?

I see nothing in the literature saying that unit is capable of playing an AVCHD disc.  Some are and some aren't

Product Features
Full HD Resolution 1080p Video Output
Up-Converts Standard DVD's to 1080p Resolution
24FPS For Cinema Like Picture Quality
HDMI Output (HDMI 1.3a Lossless High Bit Rate Audio Stream Output and Deep Color Processing - 10/12 bit)
BONUSVIEW to enjoy advanced Picture-in-Picture content

Normally the specs should include something like this: BD/DVD/CD playback(4) and AVC-HD with x.v.Color output
