this may be a very simple question, but it is reading incompatible disc.  i have tried DVD-R and DVD+R and DVD +R DL. is there something i am doing wrong

Without any more information from you I have to ask "Is your drive a DVD drive, rather than just a CD drive?"

If you haven't previously written DVDs with it, please tell us the make and model number of the drive and we can check its capabilities for you.

Or do you have your project set to make a CD instead of a DVD? In which case, any version of DVD will be "incompatible", even if your drive can write to that disc.
