I recently got an HP Mini and it came with BackOnTrack pre-installed. As far as the program goes, it seems to work fine. But every 30 minutes or so, I get a notification that BackOnTrack will not work if Windows System Restore is on. The problem is, System Restore is off. How can I fix this problem (Or at least disable the increasingly annoying notification from popping up every half hour)?

Thanks in advance.

Half an hour is being very generous. Mine is doing it about every 15 minutes (maybe less; 10 mins?).

I've tried clicking the [X] in the top right of the pop-up. I've tried clicking the message and "disabling" system restore. In both instances it just pops up again 10 minutes later warning me of the dire consequences of not disabling system restore. I went into the Control Panel to "System" and went to the System Restore tab. It is check off as "Turned Off."

So why is the software malfunctioning so annoyingly?

Should I uninstall Roxio completely? I don't really see the point of Roxio if the system itself already has a restore feature... But, then again, I've also read a few horror stories about Roxio bricking people's systems after a restore or simply by uninstalling Roxio... I'd hate to brick my new HP Mini 1000.

System Specs:
HP Mini 1000 CTO PC (according to HP's web site).
Intel Atom 270 1.6Ghz.
1GB PC2-4200 RAM
32GB SSD [Flash / Solid State Drive]
Windows XP Home (32-bit, I assume), SP3.

So, what's the diagnosis / fix? I assume pretty much all HP Mini 1000's will be doing this? So, I assume quite a few people will be "phoning in" on this one, and hopefully there's a simple fix?

Best,
~Michael

Since it came with the computer, it is an OEM [Original Equipment Mfgr] Version, modified as requested by the OEM providor (in this case, HP).

Therefore, it might be a good idea to address your concerns to HP, since they should know what they installed.

I'm having this same issue. If anyone knows solution besides uninstalling, please post. I may contact HP as this is really annoying.

I'm beginning to believe this may be a problem with the OEM version.

I have BOT installed as part of Creator 2010 and have System Restore enabled.
I've used BOT to make a recovery set and never got any warning of a conflict.

I've even got Ghost on the same XP machine with never a warning on anything.

Simply Disable the Sytem Restore!

this is unfortunately absolutely no solution at all.

the windows system restore is essential function and need to be configured and used. It works automatically and deletes old backups automatically and works very reliable.

The instant restore part of roxio is not very useful, crashes, incomplete backups and similar are frequent, and even for those where it works, one needs to operate it manually except for the time scheduled ops. This is a big nonsense.

Therefore there should be a way to disable it and use the internal windows feature.

I would not like to uninstall the roxio back up completely, since the image part of it works fine in conjunction with the HP SP42226 (bootstick creator)

So was someone able so far to find a way how to disable those pop ups from the roxio?

I have stopped all the services I could find, but apparently found not all. At present I believe the only rest is just the popup function taking my nervs.

Was anybody able to trace it somewhere, registry etc?

I installed BOT3 Suite. You can see from my post back in February.I've since found problems.

When I tried to do the Instant Restore 2 things happened.
The first was I got the warning about System Restore.I turned it off and have not seen the warning since.

The second that happened was the app was not working correctly.I couldn't save the state or anything.

What I have found out is that if you have other similar software on your machine,as an example Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image, then BOT won't work correctly.

Once I uninstalled Acronis I had to reinstall BOT.Now it works correctly.

System Restore is not needed.Bot's Instant Restore does the same thing, hence the conflict. In fact it goes 1 step further and lets you restore at boot unlike Windows where you have to get into Windows to use System Restore.

If you don't like Instant Restore then you have 2 choices.
1 is to do a Custom Install and not include the Instant Restore modules.
The 2nd is to do a Modify and remove those same modules if you've already installed them.

Yes but the bot instant restore does only fraction of what the windows tool does. In fact the bot tool is just producing huge files on the hard drive, never cleaning anything away, all backups have be done manualy appart from those made by the cronjob. Very poor functionality and rather unfriendly design. The windows tool does just much , much more.

Now to deinstall half of it, well the thing is preinstalled on the mini 110c, have no clue how to get it off , in fact the imaging part of it is fine, and works, at least with the boot stick from HP. Have tested that one and is fine. The stick allows only restore however, otherwise I would use the stick only and delete all the rest.

So I managed to stop some of the services it is producing, just some part slipped through producing this popup warning.

Windows System Restore will only restore your computer to a previous state that was saved as a restore point.True that restore points are automatically created when some programs are installed but that is done by the manufacturer of the software being installed or Windows itself.I'm not at a BOT3 computer right now so I can't tell about automatic points.
When you open System Restore all you get is 2 choices,Create a Restore Point or Restore your computer, that's it.What's done is basically the same thing as BOT's Instant Restore.
You can schedule Instant Restore to automatically create restore points on a schedule of your choosing.

Now if you're talking about Windows Backup then that's a different app.I've never really used it so I can't comment much on what it does or doesn't do.
I've always used a third party software like Ghost or True Image for my backups or images.

As far as Modifying your install try going to Control Panel Add/Remove,going to BOT and hitting Change/Remove.You should be able to get rid of Instant Restore from there and leave everything else.

MS just allocates certain portion of the drive , let say 10-15% and will do system backups each time it gets some changes, plus some time driven evets too. Important is, that MS does not full dump every time, but full dump driven by cronjob and then diffs to it, therefore saving lot of space. One can have number of backups present and still taking same amout of HD space. The oldest are getting deleted without users interaction.

The problem with BOT is, that if an average user leaves all as it is, he will get after some time 'hard disk full' since it produces full system snapshots only and this cronjob driven by default. Users might not even know the thing is on.
Then one can or one has to make backup before each operation on the system, MS will recognize changes automatically and place diff backup on each change of system automatically.

The image part of the BOT is ok, as it work like drive image xl or similar. Clearly one has to have nice tool to recover partitions and whole drive, this is solved by HP alone, giving w7 boot stick with BOT on it preinstalled.
