Not having any success with Roxio Support so will try the Forum. I have been using Roxio software for several years with no problems. My problems started when I changed my computer from XP to a new one with Vista Home Premium. I found that I could not install Easy Creator 5 Platinum because it was not compatible with Vista so I upgraded to Roxio 2009. My problem is with burning Data Files. After Burning them they appear as "READ ONLY" and cannot be changed. I have resorted to using Windows Burn which works OK. I can then use the disks the same as I used to Easy Creator 5 "DIRECT. When burned the files on the disk can be edited and saved, deleted, or added similar any computer drive. When Burning with Roxio 2009 if I edit a file I must re-save it with a new name, burn it and delete the first file. You can see this is bad when you have files that require many editings. Roxio Support after 2 weeks of worthless emails finally told me that there is no trouble thats the way it works. They further advised not to use Windows Burn since it is not as reliable or compatible. (that doesn't seem to be true). They also said CD'S are not like Floppy Disks and cannot be added, deleted, or removed once they are installed. That is also NOT TRUE. In the mean time I will continue to use Windows Burn and Roxio 2009 for other features than "DATA BURN"

Actually that is CORRECT. It appears that you were using DirectCD in EMC 5 which was removed. Packet writing 'tricked' the OS into using a CD like a floppy even though a CD can never overwrite a single file in reality. With Packet writing, you would lose that space on the CD once you overwrote a file. Not even close to being like a floppy. Packet writing was unreliable and not compatible between different packet writers. Like a disc created in Nero could not be read by Roxio Drag to Disc. Nero also removed packet writing from their suite. I think Vista might have something like that built-in although I've never check it out. What you are calling 'Data burn' means something totally different to me.In short, the feature you used before has been removed and will probably never return. Creator 2010 does have a new feature that works similar. When you insert a blank CD, an icon pops up wher eyou can drag n drop files to it. However, it does NOT use packet writing. It uses standard CD writing techniques so the CD can read on any computer. Also be aware that those discs that you created maybe not be readable in the future because the way they were burned is NOT standard.

Thanks for the response
The Burn I referred to is "Windows Burn" It works like Easy Creator 5 In that it lets you select a formatting option prior to adding files. "ie UDF 2.50". Or mastering. The 20 some CD/RW and DVD/RW disks I did in the past work just fine in this computer and appear with the "Read Only" box in properties unchecked. The disks files look just like other drives on my computer. I can open edit and save them on the disks and I don't have to leave them in the CD Drive. Hope this makes sense as I am not a Guru

Well yes Vista has Live Files System which is a Packet Writer like DCD…
Everyone here is going to tell you the same thing – Packet Writing is poor way to save data.
But it is clear you aren’t going to listen until you lose everything on a disc or 2.
This is not a Roxio issue, all support will have to come from MicroSoft.

Once again I thank you for taking the time to give me the good information. I will be upgrading to Roxio 2010 soom. I do have most every thing on my older disks backed up on Flash drives, or other hard drives. It may be that these will replace CD's like CD's replaced Floppies. It is difficult to keep abreast of today's technologies. Again thanks you have been a great help to me.
