When I upload directly from VW using Export/Share, it converts the .dmsm file to a .wmv file to upload to YouTube. One file converted to a .wmv file of about 54MBs, but when I used Export to a video file (in VW) for the same .dmsm to a .mpg (720x480) file, the file size was about 10 times larger than the .wmv file, and the YouTube quality was much better.
So, until I learn what's going on, I have to convert (export) a .dmsm file to a .mpg file and then upload that from YouTube rather than using the share option on VW.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Tangle

So Is that a statement or comment? Yes, you can get better quality by outputting to a file and then uploading that.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

What I stated that I've tried and the results of the effort was a statement.
"Thoughts?" was a question I hoped might prompt someone might shed some light on why the .wmv gets compressed so much for an upload.

tangle: Minor correction, a dmsm file is just that, a file.
When you use Export As, you are converting the “Project” currently loaded in VW.
I think you answer lies in your settings. – I haven’t used the Output – Share Online, but I am guessing it either automatically set the Quality, or you had it set too low.
When you went to Export As, you selected a WVM output of higher Quality which is why you got that result.
Snoop around in Share Online for setting options or maybe someone with experience in that would be kind enough to post…

Jim, not sure what the correction is. I called the .dmsm a file repeatedly in my OP. The .dmsm file doesn't contain video, but obviously parameters that define how to present a video file. I.e. it contains edit info. When we save the production, the production is saved as a .dmsm file. Although the .dmsm file contains no video, it does define not only the raw video files required but also all editing that was done.
When we use the OUTPUT/Share Online feature in VW, the .dmsm file controls how the video files are 'filtered' and uploaded. E.g. If I load a video file directly from YouTube, the quality and content is whatever the video itself is. If I upload the very same file via VW OUTPUT/Share Online, VW creates a composite .wmv file that contains the video as edited. It is this .wmv file that is then uploaded to YouTube, but for some reason the video resolution of the .wmv file winds up with poor resolution.

That's what I presumed as well, but so far I can't find any way to alter the settings for Share Online. It's a pretty direct three step procedure. Sign In, add video info - title, tags, etc., and press Done to upload. There are no settings in the procedure. Soooo... if settings can be changed, it has to be from some place other than Share Online.
As I think about it, the advantage of Output/Share Online vs Output/Export is not all that much and as you said you do get to select the resolution (quality) with the latter.
I do appreciate and thank you for your thoughts. I will prowl around in VW a bit more and see if I can find a way to modify the quality of the Share Online feature.
Many thanks for your time and thoughts,
Tangle

I know what a dmsm file is… You usage is improper. You can Load a dmsm file and you can Save a dmsm file but you cannot Export a dmsm file nor can you Output/Share one… You are referring to a VideoWave Production, not a dmsm file.
The advantage in using Output/Share Online, would fall to someone who has no idea what those settings are and no interest in learning them
Still it would be handy to have an Options button available…

I wasn't questioning that you know what a dmsm file is - I thought you might like to know that I also know what one is.
You are taking exception to the phrase, "...I have to convert (export) a .dmsm file..." True, that is technically incorrect. I was using the phrase in a conceptual sense in that the content of the .wmv file would be controlled exclusively by the .dmsm file. Technically I shoud have said, "I have to convert (export) the production...". I stand rightly, technically corrected.
A potential advantage of the Output/Share Online method is that it is a single operation. One doesn't have to do a conversion, wait for that, then upload, etc. If the resolution was not an issue, one could simply fill in the YouTube info, press GO and the conversion and uploading is done without further intervention.
And sure, if the output resolution is fixed in Output/Share Online, as it appears to be, one either accepts it and uses it or uses another method.
