Does BackOnTrack™ 3 let a user do a complete backup to a network drive? In other words, can you create an image of your boot drive in a folder on a network drive. the statement "lets you back up your entire hard disk including the operating system, files, settings and programs and protects you in case of system or disk crash, virus attack or other catastrophic failure." does not tell a user what are acceptable devices that can be utilized for backing up ones boot drive.

Generally, that's a good rule, but I can't say for sure that it won't do what he wants without trying it. The bigger issue would be restoring. I believe you can make a bootable media (DVD or CD) to restore with, but I doubt that you can access the image via the network from the bootable media. I'd have to try it, some applications can do it, but I'm really not sure about Back-On-Track.

Of course there's always the option of making the backup on a partition or separate drive and just copying that file to the network drive

OK - it makes it a two stage job, but it should work

However, I was at the lauch (in Ireland) for Windows 7 today and MS told us there that they do provide a means of doing that using the Deployment Toolkit (free from here)

Thank you to the members of the Digital Guru group. I appreciate your responses but the answers do not give me enough confidence to upgrade to the 2010 Pro version. I'm now inclined to upgrade to the standard 2010 version and purchase Acronis's True Image 2009 backup S/W.

Well, I can't disagree with what you say above. I've used True Image for years. You should be able to make a backup to a network drive using True Image, but I believe it'll depend on what edition you get as to whether you'll be able to access the network to do a full restore. I'm not sure if the "home" edition (or whatever it's called) can access the network to do a full restore. But if you only need to access the image for specific files (while Windows is running) it'll be fine.

I doubt I'll get a chance to play with BOT to answer your question for certain for a day or two.
