Hi, I am trying to copy an audio project (about 40 GB) for a client to DVD+R's.  Creator says it will take 9 disks.  When I successfully completed the first 3 disks, Roxio failed on the 4th disk.  I put in another disk so Roxio could try again to burn the 4th disk, but there was no way to resume the burning process.  The only option I was given was to cancel.  Then, I had to start over from the beginning, thereby, wasting the first 3 good disks.

On the second attempt everything worked fine, but I was wondering if I did something wrong?  It seems to me that if the software fails to burn one disk in a series like that, then there certainly should be a way to resume burning from the point at which the failure occurred.  Also, does this method actually split large files, or does it just simply go to the next disk when it encounters a file that is too big to fit in the remaining space on the current disk?  I do not want the program to split any files and render them unusable for my client.  I just want to copy all of the files to the DVD's so that I can give them to the client and he can then do with them as he pleases.  But I do not want my client to have to do any form of restoration before he copies these files to his computer for further processing.  Many thanks to all who respond.  gdancoleman

Personally I think it is a fast track to disaster! I do mine manually. It takes a few minutes but it never fails whereas spanned disc projects do fail from time to time…

You set the behavior of the files under Project Properties.

If you insist on using this risky process, you can improve your odds by only using quality media such as, Verbatim & Taiyo Yuden.

Although my last failure (last week) was with Verbatim and I lost all data!

Thank you for your advice.  Incidentally, I already use Taiyo Yuden CDRs.  They are the standard here.  I have not had any more failures since the one I first mentioned.  I got all of the files copied to DVD+Rs.  One of the directories contained 5.4 GB of files, so that particular directory had to be placed on more than one DVD since the limit is 4.7 Gb.  I still do not know if any of the individual files were split in the process.  I hope not, because my client needs the files intact for further processing.

I will not make a habit of using disc spanning.  I was not pleased with how it performed.  It can fail midway through and force you to start again from the beginning, wasting any discs that were successfully made in the process.  This is a BIG risk, since failure can occur at any time--even on your last disc.  Apparently, there is no way to know just what files are on what discs either.  One would have to copy the entire set back to hard disc before being certain that all the files are present and intact.

Spanning is far more complex that meets the eye!

To take the easy path, WinZip  laugh.gif
