Or mpeg, that would work too. First timer here. Any help will be appreciated.
Also, can I rip individual scenes (not the whole DVD) to avi or mpeg? Thanks.

First, the DVD has to be non-encrypted so there is no copy protection. Choose DVD video as the format in the Video window. Insert the DVD (or place a VIDEO_TS folder on the desktop) and choose DVD with the top button of the Toast Media Browser. You can use the button beneath "DVD" to select the titles or chapter level of the DVD. If you want to drag in individual chapters rather than an entire title select the chapters level and drag over the chapter(s) you want to the main Toast window.
If you have an Intel Mac and OS 10.5 or later you might check out the new Popcorn 4. When dragging content from a DVD or VIDEO_TS folder from the Media Browser a window opens for selecting specific scenes you want to convert.
Neither Toast nor Popcorn give the option to save as an MPEG 2 file although dragging a title from the Media Browser to the Video window will result in an .mpg version of the file being written in the Roxio Converted Items folder (in your Documents folder). You can export to a MPEG 4 and DivX with Toast 8 that are typically the format used within an .avi container. Toast Help explains this.

I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!
