I just purchased Creator 2010 and installed on XP SP3 Media Edition and found most of the icons that were in the system tray had disappeared. Nothing I tried would get the icons back. After noticing that SP1 download was now available for Creator 2010, I installed it even though no specific references were made to fixing icons. Happily, after installing SP1, all the system tray icons reappeared -THANKS!!

That is good, but I would keep that HDD well backed up.

Nothing in 2010 that could ever do what you saw… There is something else ticking away in your OS and it will probably fail without warning.

Jim,
Thanks for the advice - My praise for SP1 was short lived - the next time the computer was rebooted most of the icons in the system tray disappeared again and no amount of reboots will cure it - I think I'll start turning off things in my startup system one by one and see if I can find the offender but will also try 2010 removal and reinstall.

Hi Scott,

I have experienced the same thing (both with 2010 Pro, which I've just installed and EMC8) and have the solution for you...

What I was seeing was that after install, most of my notification tray icons would be missing. This was always the case, after every reboot. However, if I "logged off" and logged back on, all of the icons would reappear. This has long been an issue with Windows XP and many people have gotten hit by it. In many cases, it is some combination of SSDP & UPNP that causes the tray icons not to appear. With Roxio, Media Manager depends on these types of services for its folder monitoring. Here are a couple of methods to use to get everything back to normal:

Method #1 step 1 - optionally disable Media Manager folder monitoring
..... in Media Manager: Tools -> Select Monitored Folders...
..... uncheck "Start folder monitoring" and "Monitor folders at startup"
..... click OK

Method #1 step 2 - disable SSDP and/or UPNP services
..... Right click My Computer/Manage. Expand Services and Applications then Click on Services. A list of services appears in the right column. Scroll down to the the SSDP and uPnP (Universal Plug and Play). Right click each, choose properties. Change the text next to "Startup type:" to Disabled. Some have had good luck only disabling one of those services and/or setting them to Automatic. See what works best for you.

Method #2 - Hide icons for networked uPnP devices
Open "My Network Places" and in the left-hand Tasks panel, select "Hide icons for networked uPnP devices". (If you're using Windows Classic folders you'll have to change the Folder Options to "Show common tasks in folders" to see this.) This stops the display of the icons but does not disable the services needed for some devices to work. Although many people have found that this solution works for them, others have not.

You can find more info on this problem at:

click on the "N" at the top of the page and then search for: "Notification Area - Icons Disappearing"

Good luck,

Thanks for the help, Steven!!
I used your method 1 and tried one step at a time with reboots - had to finally disable both SSDP and Upnp in addition to the modications in the Media manager settings - works fine now! I did notice that despit unchecking the "Start folder monitoring", it checks itself again on the next computer boot. The "monitor folders at startup" does stay unchecked.
Thanks again for the help!
