Yep, that's it....They pay a royalty on a Music CD....

cd

Actually, there is a difference on the disc itself.  A bit or byte that's pressed into the disc information area so that the stand-alone players know it's a "Music CD" and will record on it.  They won't record onto regular CD-R "data" CDs.

I believe that is right.  I have a stand alone player in my living room, and can copy or record CD to CD, but I have to use "Music CDs".   I can't play regular CDs on it.  But computers and auto will play both.  Not sure what we are going to do now.  Too bad Yuden doesn't carry Music CDs, that would solve all my problems.  I have really learned alot lately.   Thanks again.  MK

As of October, the T-Y brand name was changed to JVC.  They are probably selling old stock.  And perhaps JVC makes Music CD blanks.  I don't know if T-Y took over all production or are just contracting but the quality should go up.

Yes, Dave is correct.

The OP isn't using a stand-alone recorder to burn Audio Cd's is she/he?

I was under the impression the OP was using a PC, Samsung Drive, and Roxio software?

Correct, they're currently burning on a PC in a "standard" burner.  But the question was asked about whether or not they should be using "Music CDs", to which the answer is, "no".  As it turns out, they also have a stand alone Music CD Recorder, which does require the "music CD" discs, which is probably what prompted the original question.

Yes, you are right.  Using a PC to burn the CDs, using Roxio to to do all this and very happy with the quality and output of the CDs. Was burning on Memorex Music CDs, but after buffer problems, we ditched them.  I happened to have some TDK Music CDs, and right now they are working fine.  Can play them in stand alone (which only takes Music CDs) auto, and computer.  Hate to switch to regular CDs after all this - couldn't play them on stand alone.  Will go back and see if I can find a Music CD from JVC.  Just trying to get the best quality Music CD I can get.  Will keep digging.     If anyone has suggestions, I am willing to listen and learn.  Thanks.   MK

What wouldn't play on your stand alone player?

I've burned hundreds of data CD-R's as Audio CD's and never met a player that won't play them...

My stand alone only plays, records and copies Music CDs.  It's a Phillips and we have had it about 4 - 5 years now.  I can put 3 Music CDs in it to play consecutively.  I can record from a turntable or cassette player to the Phillips.  The Phillips will not recognize anything but a Music CD.   Having a tough time online trying to find Music CDs, but will plug on.  MK

I find that hard to believe...

I buy Phillips because they usually play anything.

In fact most Phillips product box's have these words on the box "Simply Plays Them All"

I APOLOGIZE, I APOLOGIZE!!!!!   Sometimes I feel so old and stupid.  I took an old Cd  that I had recorded long ago(it is not a Music CD, just a CD-R) and sure enough it plays in the stand alone recorder.   When recording discs, I need Music CDs, but it will play both types of CDs.  You are a life saver!!!!!!!!!  I just assumed - and I will never do that again.  Now I can go back and order the Yuden.  How do I ever thank you????  MK

I had to do a little exploring, because years ago, I had read that there is no difference between how a regular CD-R and a Music CD-R are made.

I found this at MyCE (the old CD-Freaks?).  Scroll down to Post #6.

http://club.myce.com/f58/why-buy-cd-r-audi...g-music-175302/

With that, I still don't know what to believe.  I have burned many music CDs, on both regular CD-R media, and Music CD-R media, and I have seen no difference except the price of the discs.  All of the discs play in whatever CD player I put them in.

Again, my understanding is a bit or byte pressed into the disc information area that indicates it is a Music CD (with royalties paid), which the stand alone players need to read before they'll record on the disc.  All the rest is identical.  Playback of either Music or "standard" CD-R disc should be fine on any player.  How the music information is actually recorded is identical for either type of disc, creating a standard CD-DA disc.
