No thumbnails for avi files under "My Media" tab

I am adding more information because this problem exists on one of my computers (desktop) and not another (laptop). I have installed Roxio 2009 in both Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit on my desktop and in both cases the media detector does not find most of the video files. When I add them manually they have question marks instead of thumbnails. However, the same 32 bit Win 7 install on my laptop shows all my video files after media manager has finished its cataloging and the thumbnails appear as they should. What would cause this problem? Is there any way to correct it? Both computers have the same basic folder structure with my data and video files being kept on separate partitions, which I have pointed Roxio to. The desktop install of Roxio finds a few avi files (5) in the video folders and displays them correctly from the folder with my video files, just not the majority (a hundred or so).

AVI file is not AVI, as it can be created using different Codecs (if you open Media files with, say, Notepad, you will see the name of the used Codec somewhere in the first lines; e.g., vidsmp42, vidsmjpg, vidscvid, etc., etc.). If you do not have the Codec installed then the media player could as well try to playback a text file; i.e., it has no clue about its video and audio format!
I venture that one PC has a few more Codes installed than the other; Codecs usually come with audio/video applications; many are also available free; just Google around.
Hope this helps.

cool!
BTW, ever wondered how to access the content of an .ISO file?
Here is a tool I stumbled upon: http://www.pismotechnic.com/download/
You "mount" the .ISO file (right-click on the bugger), and then it becomes a (virtual) folder; until you "unmount" it.
Cheerio!

I had the necessary codecs, otherwise the files wouldn't have displayed correctly in the "folder" tab. The problem turned out to be a permission problem with the folders. Apparently the Roxio "media manager" program needed different permissions to access the folders and display the thumbnails than is required in explorer or even the "folder tab" display. Once I changed the permissions of the folders, all worked correctly.

got it — that "feature" with the security attributes got introduced in Vista, and I had lots of fun!
I had been under the impression that a few AVI files were displayed with correct icons, whereas others were not. Glad to hear you got that one resolved!
Thank you for sharing.

You were correct that some avi files were displayed and others were not...but those being displayed were in folders that had different permissions than the folders that would not display. Somehow sharing my folders between Vista and Windows 7 RC messed up the permissions in lots of my folders that I accessed with both operating systems. I think the problem still exists between Vista and Win 7, especially if you use the Homegroup feature.

yep; I had a problem with one application in Vista, just wouldn't do certain tasks; turned out, it somehow could not access the TMP folder; after I removed the "Everyone Deny" entry in the Security attributes, the application behaved amiable. :-)
well, there are so many problems in various operating systems, drivers, applications, and what not, because the companies (cutting corners) let inexperienced software programmers do their thing, to somewhat, well, interesting results!
Microsoft then learnt the hard way with Windows Vista (hmm, why not already with Windows ME, or Windows 3.0, or ...?), and have implemented (more) stringent code reviews.
Complete overhaul of Windows 6.0 was then done by the Windows server guys, and Windows 6.1 (Windows 7) came out, closely followed by its server version, Windows Server 2008 R2.
Enjoy! :-)
