What kind of avi file is it?DV avi, DivX, Xvid? Where did you get it?
You could try Videowave (Edit - Advanced) to convert the file using Output/Export As.
Why do you want to convert to wmv?

Your conversion might be another victim of this abandoning of XviD/DivX.

C2010 still seems to accept DivX files but has no output compatibility.
Brendon, what is the difference between DivX and Xvid? How can I tell which one I have?

XviD is older, so it has the widest base at the moment. It is also a standard for "scene" releases.
DivX is newer but has heaps more features - menus, subtitles and stuff - and its base is growing exponentially. Hundreds of models of DVD players are now "DivX Certified" and will play DivX AVIs from a data disc straight onto your television without you having to convert it to a DVD.
To find what codec an AVI uses, probably the GSpot Codec Information Appliance is the easiest I think. It's a free, small download and it tells you up in the top right corner which codec is used in the AVI, and if you have the codec you need.

I have several DVD players that play DivX/Xvid. I download a lot of TV programs from the German networks and most of those are all in DivX. I burn these directly to DVD (RWs) and can easily watch them on the players. One player has a USB 2.0 port and I now even use a memory drive to copy the DivXs to the drive and watch them. Really saves a lot of burning time and DVD media.
I just can't understand why Roxio no longer wants to support that format
