What would be the difference between using my Canon digital camcorder to convert the output from my VCR or Beta into iMovie versus the VHS to DVD USB hardware set up. I converted a bunch of old Sony Hi 8 tapes into iMovie flawlessly.

Can anybody advise?

If you want it in iMovie then the better method is with your camcorder. The Easy VHS to DVD for Mac captures in MPEG 2 format which iMovie doesn't accept without an additional conversion. If you goal is to have the shortest distance between a VHS tape and a video DVD using the Mac without using iMovie, then the Roxio device is better than your camcorder transfer.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!
