My iPod library audio files are saved as .m4a files, which is supposed to be a supported file format for Easy Media Creator 10.  When I try and open a file in Sound Editor or Audio Converter, or add a track into Music Disc Creator, I get the following message:  "The file "..." does not exist or is not a supported audio file."

I know the file exists, so that's not the issue.  If I take other mp3 files and convert them to m4a files in Audio Converter, EMC 10 allows me to work with these files, so I am assuming that there must be something different in how EMC 10 is looking at the iPod created m4a files.  Has anyone elese run into this?  Is there some known incompatibility between Apple Lossless m4a's and EMC 10?  And is there a patch or workaround (besides converting all the files back to wav files)?

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Are these iTunes purchased files?

No -- these are files I imported from CD.

.wav or you meant .m4a. And you used iTunes to convert your tracks to .m4a? Does it happen to one or more of the files? There seems to be something wrong with those files. I don't have EMC10 installed but I just tried in Creator 2010 and did not have any issues.

Sorry -- .m4a.  I used iTunes to convert all of my tracks to m4a -- every track I have tried all seem to have this same issue.  So it appears to be universal among my iTunes files.

I just imported a cd using iTunes v9.0.2.25 and the Apple Lossless Encoder.
This created m4a files in my iTunes library.

These must be protected files.
I tried to use them in C2010 and it wouldn't use them.
I tried to play them in WMP11 and it wouldn't use them either.
I could play them if I used iTunes.

As iTunes downloads are m4a and protected I'm thinking that when you use iTunes to rip it creates protected m4a files.

You'd probably be better off using Windows Media Player or Roxio itself to rip your cd's.

I agree with Terry. I thought I had used Apple Lossless file to test, but apparently I selected incorrect version. Now that I have retested, the Apple Lossless apparently puts protection header vs AAC version. So its more how Apple wanted the files to be smile.gif

Thanks for the replies.  I've already imported all my CD's through iTunes, so that ship has sailed.  Does anyone know if the newer versions of Media Creator (2009 or 2010) play nicely with the Apple proprietary files?

I have the same version of iTunes, and when I first started importing from our CD's, to put on my wife's iPod Touch, I did the first CD as Apple Lossless.  The size of the files, alone, resulted in me making the decision to dump those first files and import them as mp3s at 192 kbps.  They sound fine, especially with the iPod connected to our home theater speaker system.

There is no problem playing, or using any of those mp3 files anywhere I want.  The Apple Lossless works in iTunes, and that's the only place I got it to work. sad.gif

I agree on using EMC 10 to rip the CDs, if you want to go to a higher quality on the iPod than mp3.

As per Steve's post, they can't be used in Creator 2010.

My test was with the newest version so,no they won't play nicely.Since those files are protected no version of Roxio will use them.
