Ok so just got Toast 10 and I have a whole bunch of music videos that I wanted to burn on a DVD and make a proper menu and all that.

So these videos are in all different formats like avi, vob, mp4, xvid.

When i click and drag the avi one's first of all there thumbnail picture doesn't show up and comes up as empty, then when I click to edit them I can't press play and watch the video either just the music plays but no video. I don't care if it doesn't play it there as long as it plays it after I burn it in my DVD player. So my question is would it, regardless of the fact thumbnail doesn't show up and stuff?

mp4 works fine after getting dragged, thumbnail shows up, when I click edit I can watch the movie etc. Why can't I do this with the above format?

Now the biggest problem, I have TONS of videos that are in XVID format and whenever I drag those it just doens't work at all. It just pops up some kind of an error saying XVID codec or something? Any ideas what's happened cause this is really bothering me as most of my videos are in this format. mad.gif

How can I fix this and how can I get all these videos that aren't working to get into Roxio so that I can burn them?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help guys, hopefully you can help me out with my above mentioned queries.

Thanks

Do not install Xvid codecs as that causes problems for Toast. If you have them, remove them. Install the perian codec from perian.org. I believe you'll have problems with a video in which Toast cannot scroll through the video to select a menu button image.

Toast should work with any QuickTime playable video presuming the necessary codecs are present. Windows Media formats require a paid version of Flip4Mac.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

Hi Thanks for your reply. I am confused about what you mean by do not install xvid codecs but install perian codecs? I installed videos that were xvid, not any codecs?
Also so basically avi is the most common video format and that one doesn't scrol through properly and so far only mp4 format video has seemed to work for me. So I only can find mp4 videos if i want to burn a dvd? that kinda defeats the whole point of roxio, i thought it was supposed to burn 'all' formats. sad.gif

I am not even sure if I have xvid codecs or no, how can I check? I just installed perian from that website you gave me, so now in Roxio I should be able to drag and drop my xvid format videos? Thanks

Ohh thanks so much tsantee! I installed perian and that fixed both xvid not being able to go and avi not being able to scroll through problem! Thank you so much. smile.gif I don't think i ever had xvid from before since to watch movies and stuff i use VLC and that doesn't need any codecs. But thanks.

Ok so I have a new problem now? i don't understand this one problem after another.

So while burning the DVD at 88% i got an error saying 'hardware error, id...sense..disc' or something like that. I don't remember exactly, so what went wrong? everything was going fine and it was taking a long time but getting there and then it just gave me an error out of nowhere!?

The error could be related to your recorder drive or the brand/type of DVD media you are using. Try saving as a disc image first and then try burning the saved disc image to DVD instead of directly burning it to the DVD using slower write speed. BTW what brand of DVDs are you using?

For write speed I just picked 'best'. It was going at like 4 or 5. What are the steps for saving disc image first and then burning? There was an option there to save disc image, just use that? Once that's done how can I burn?

DVD;s I am using are Playo DVD +R
4.7 gig 120 min

I checked the DVD had 20 music videos in it, last two didn't get burned and 18th gets messed up in the end. Also is there a way to fit more music videos on one DVD? Or do I only have to get the bigger 9 gig ones? I was going by the time on the top, cause it would keep on letting me put more and more videos and every time it would show 60 mb left, I would try to put one last one the memory would go back to 500mb? What's up with that? So i just went with the time that was also being shown and for DVD's it is 120 mins and shown was 117 mins, so I left it there.

I'll answer as many as I can.

When you select "save as disc image, a window will open where you can set where to save the file to and also set the write speed.  You may want to set it to two.

Yes, once you have the video the way you want it (type menu, button set) in the toast video window, then in the lower right part of that window, click on "save as disc image". Toast will encode it and place an image file where you set it to.  Once that image file is created, then double click on it, toast will mount that image on the DT, then open apple dvd player and see if it plays in apple dvd player.  If so, then that means that toast is able to encode the video file.  You could then either use toast to burn the dvd or you could also use apple's built in disk utility to do the same.

Toast allows you to encode/burn up to four hours of video on a standard dvd using its' own compression.

Not sure if your dvd player will play dvd-r's or not.  that's all I've ever used.

All of what "bohalloran" mentioned +
1. I suggest picking up better brand of media like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden
2. Generally you can fit upto 1 hour of quality video on a SL media. What this means is fitting more videos will require you to reduce quality. You could try lowering the bit rate in Custom options and see if the resultant DVD is acceptable. If not you will have to consider DL media.
