Our video camera records on a small dvd, and records for about 1/2 hour. I have home videos that were burned onto regular DVD's. The media import would not recognize my dvd, so I copied and pasted them to the computer, and that seems to work. It saves the files with the "_ts" extension, but it saves the entire video as one long 1/2 hour recording, even though there are many breaks in that 1/2 hour.
How do I break each DVD into 'clips' that I can then use in creating a production?
I don't mean using Edit Chapters. I need to break each DVD down into 'clips'. Other clips were saved previously by my husband, but he doesn't remember how he did it. Those files are saved on the computer as type called "movie clip". I don't know how to make the movie clips from my DVD.
We have Windows Vista, and Roxio creator 2009 if that helps. Thanks in advance!! I can't find any help in the "help", tutorials. And I am wasting so much time barking up the wrong trees!

Open Media Manager , Navigate to the video and right clcik on it. Select scene detection. After this is done, look for the small down arrow next to the video.
Also you can watch this.
Also you can watch this.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

I was so glad to get your response, thank you! I followed through the steps you suggested, successfully I think, but it did not give me the expected outcome. I was able to add scenes through "scene detection". I then went into myDVD and added the movie, however, it still did not break it down into the "scenes" I had marked. It adds the movie as one long 30 minute clip. I am working in the 'edit' screen, I believe of myDVD: the screen is broken into thirds, and the lower portion offers storyling-timeline-and internal tracks.
I'm sorry if I'm not describing this with the right jargone. I expected Roxio to be easier to use! But any help would be greatly appreciated.
(PS the link you added did not work, so I was unable to see a tutorial)

Do you want scenes or chapters? Scenes are one after another with maybe transitions in between.
Chapters are parts of a movie where you select the starting point and the video plays from there to the end. Videos are individual movies where you set the one you want to watch and you return to the menu after that. Read this (thanks to Jim Hardin).

I reviewed the link you sent me. I guess I am looking to make scenes at this point. I used scene detection, and was able to drag them individually into the timeline in VideoWave. Previously, I was using myDVD and I see from your link that you cannot use scenes in myDVD.
I guess I don't understand the difference between VideoWave and MyDVD. I read over the manual, but still don't understand what the difference is between them - can you explain?
Also, is it possible to save these 'scenes' to my computer, so I can organize and re-arrange them? I tried a copy in roxio and paste on my computer, but that did not work.
I think your previous info will get me to the next step in the process. Thanks very much!

Video Wave is really the video editor/slide show maker. It has all the tools for that. It also has some functions to help you to convert projects to other formats for posting to thngs like You Tube. MyDVD is the application to arrange your projects on a DVD (with or without a menu) and burn to a DVD. You can get from Video Wave to MyDVD but that only adds the one project you are working on. Changes made to videos made in MyDVD do not reflect to Video Wave. With My DVD, you can add as many videos or project as will fit on a disc. One hour of best quality video on a single sided DVD. You can fit up to just under and hour but the quality will probablly be unwatchable.
If you just want to use the scenes in Video Wave, they are always there in Video Wave and in "My Media" See the little down arrow? If you want to save them on your computer for a different reason, add the scene to Video Wave (only that one) and output to the format of your choice. Use the film reel icon above the preview window in Video Wave. mpg2 is the format used for DVDs. There are dozens (it seems like) f selectable formats for anythng from YouTube to IPod, to web formats. etc.
Remember that there are more than one way to accomplish the same things.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
