we are trying to set up an auto backup...we have reviewed our settings a million times....the where, when & how are set correctly to backup certain files daily at 11:30 to an external hard drive...it NEVER works! what am i missing?

Computer specs and OS. Please provide that information.
How is the hard drive plugged into your computer other than USB - front, back or hub?
Is your computer set to sleep or hibernate during the time you want to make the back up?
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
