I'm using Easy CD Creator 5 Basic and would like to burn DVD data discs with it using an LG GWA-4166B.  I have updated the Roxio software to version 5.3.5. but get a message telling me that no supported DVD recorders are detected on my system when the GWA-4166B is installed.  Roxio supports the other DVD burner I own, a Plextor, but unfortunately that one has produced only coasters every time I've attempted a DVD burn with it (even when using PlexTools software, I'm afraid).  Roxio does recognize the GWA-4166B for the purposes of making data and music CDs and for disc copying.  I've read that I might try updating the firmware on the GWA-4166B, but the only update I've found (from HP, the OEM for which LG manufactured the GWA-4166B) applies just to XP, while I am running 2000 Professional.  I'm unsure if that would be the solution even if I could install the XP update, since Roxio does recognize the drive and allows data CD burning.  My question is, how do I make my updated v.5.3.5. program "support" my GWA-4166B drive for data DVD burning?   Is that possible, or do I need an update later than v.5.3.5.?

Johnny, there is no update later than 5.3.5

It might be possible to allow your GWA-4166B to be recognized, however you're trying to run a new drive with old software, in a positively ancient Operating System so nothing can be guaranteed.

I'm guessing that the full drive ID of your drive will be HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4161B. Please run Windows Device Manager, expand the entry for DVD/CD-ROM drives, and check the ID(s) you see. If your drive's ID isn't exactly what I've written above, write it down somewhere and use that instead of what I've written.
Here's a Device Manager display, showing what to look for.

Try this:
-run your registry editor, REGEDIT
-press Ctrl-F [find] and search for device001 You should find yourself at this entry
"device001"="GENERIC FREECOM48H,GENERIC,FREECOM48H,SAMSUNG48X24,cdrmmc.drv,171,,9"

-Double-click on device001 and the contents of that key should appear in an edit box, highlighted in blue.
-If your drive ID is not EXACTLY what I've said, modify the underlined parts in the next line so that they match your drive's ID,
then Paste this entry into the edit box to replace the original contents
HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4161B,HL-DT-ST,DVDRRW GWA-4161B,DVD+-R/RW,cdrmmc.drv,178,,9
-click OK to complete the edit, and then get out of the editor.

With luck, this new entry in device001 should let ECDC 5 recognize the drive for data DVD writing. The usual disclaimers apply - it might not work for you, YMMV, and traces of nuts . . .

Please come back to me if you have trouble understanding or following the procedure.

Brendon, thank you for the response and the great help.  I'm usually the first one to bungle a set of directions, but your instructions were so clear that even I couldn't mess them up!  The registry fix worked perfectly, so thanks to you I have now burned my first data DVD.  I appreciate the help more than I can tell you; just let me say that I'm very, very happy right now after having gone through a few days of frustration over this and other pc problems.

This was the first time I ever attempted a registry fix -- and I've always heard that you NEVER want to mess with the registry! -- so I was quite nervous about it.  If it's not too difficult to answer, another question comes to mind:  could the exact registry fix you provided me be used for any burner in ECDC, provided that I inserted the drive's ID exactly as displayed in Device Manager?  Or would a different device require that everything else be rewritten along with the new ID?  I tried to search this before asking, but the results weren't all that helpful.  Thanks.

Hi again,
Glad it worked.

No, not just any entry will work. They vary according to software version and characteristics of the drive. If I can find one which matches closely enough I can steal an existing entry, but otherwise it can be quite a hard slog to get enough information about the drive to build an entry which should work.

OK, appreciate knowing that.  Again, thanks for the great help.
