:)  With Many thanks to skinis FOR ALL THE HELP AND PATIENCE.

If I still had a sense of humor after 7 long days of trying to get EMC-8 up and running, I would say that discovering my computer is likely not up to the task is rather like learning that your beloved family pet is not the admirable purebred you thought it was, but rather a cute mongrel (like the lab-weimeraner cross who lives here).

Judging by the many comments from lots of people about slow & sluggish running, freezes & crashes etc, I think that ROXIO should be posting some sort of warning on the box that only those with the most modern computer equipment should buy this product!

ANYWAY: I have run every diagnostic I can think of, have repaired, uninstalled, re-installed the program and the 8.05 patch, downloaded all the suggested hotfixes, updated DirectX 9 (which was already installed and said to be running perfectly). I even scanned for viruses and Defragged just for good measure - and the preview still wont display the imported pictures. (FYI the pix I have tried importing are all jpeg format from 2 different digital cameras and also scanned, all my own proerty from files on my computer.) Interestingly enough i can use all the other features like add music and can move and manipulate the pictures in the production storyline boards.

SO I guess my next step is either upgrade my computer or as SKINIS suggested downgrade my version.
I don't mind the upgrade except for the time and fuss. If I downgrade to EMC-7 will it still allow me to create a DVD with slideshows integrated with video and playable on a computer OR a TV??

Many thanks to everyone who has tried to help me with this problem - and my heartfelt sympathy to all the other persons who are posting the same sort of problems!
Signing off my slow dialup now so I can use the phone see if Business Depot will play the downgrade game. (And never mind the 45 minute drive to their nearest outlet, it's the price I pay to be living in paradise)

The quick answer is yes, v7 and v7.5 will allow you to integrate stills with video playable on computer and TV. Just check the requirement specs on the box to make sure your computer is to those specs.

If you are trying to find a place to get ver. 7 or 7.5 I suggest getting 7.5. It has a few more inhancements. And you might have to look around a bit to find a copy. They are getting scarce. Try techforless.com
I think they still have 7.5 at a reasonable price. In the mean time keep working with ver 8 as one day you will find an answer to your problem.
