Incorrect length for some videos

I have several videos of over an hour in length that I am trying to burn in Toast. But when I select them in Toast, I notice they show up only as five-second videos. Quicktime only reads the first five seconds as well, but VLC can play the entire file without problems. If this is just a codec issue, how can I check what codec I need, and where could I get it from?

What format are the videos? What was used to create them?
