I just got Toast 10 and converted a home-made DVD (containing a single VIDEO_TS folder) to a .dv file hoping to open it in iMovie for editing but iMovie won’t accept it. I tried also using QuickTime but that didn’t work either.
Is it possible to do this using Toast? Am I doing something wrong?

It should work presuming you used the Convert window and selected the DV export option. I'll give it a try to see if I experience the problem, but I won't have time to do this for a few days.

As a workaround choose DVD with the top button of the Toast Media Browser. If you don't see the Media Browser choose Show Media Browser in the Windows menu. You should something described in the browser window that is your VIDEO_TS folder. If you don't see it you can use the button to the right of DVD to search for it. Double-click on the text in the browser window and you'll see a thumbnail image of all its video titles.

Select Video Files as the format in the Convert window and drag over the title(s) you want from the Media Browser. When Toast finishes extracting the title(s) click the red button and choose the DV conversion.

Let me know if you encounter the same problem.

I actually made 2 .dv files, one selecting the disk as you described and again by dragging the VIDEO_TS folder from the disk to the Toast window. Neither opened in iMovie however I just now tried to open one of them in Final Cut Pro and it loaded, although I’ve never used the program so I’m not sure if it will be editable yet.
I also converted it to an .mp4 file and it won’t open either. I have iMovie 08, not HD, but the original footage was VHS standard def so I don’t see a conflict there.
I also just tried opening one of the .dv files in Premiere Pro CS3 and it works there as well.
So what’s the problem with iMovie I wonder...
Guess I’ll have to learn a new program. Which one would be best for basic editing?

Interesting. I need to try this when I get back from my trip. In the meanwhile, what do you consider basic editing? If all you're needing is to cut out segments then you can do that with the editor in Toast on either the original MPEG 2 video or on the converted DV video. If you want to add titles and transitions and other movie-making stuff then use whichever application seems intuitive enough to do what you want.
