Hello,

I am using EMC 8 and I used Roxio Retrieve to back up about 8GB of data via 2 DVD-R discs. From my research before posting, it appears this is my fault for not testing the backup, but I've never had a problem with Retrieve until this time. This is also the first time I've used encryption and the file name hiding ability (backing up data on my work PC), which may have been my downfall. I figure I'd post and see if anyone had any other suggestions. Both discs are readable, both discs start up Retrieve just fine, but any file that needs to be retrieved from the first disc pops up a window with the following message:

An error reading file <drive>:\<path>\<encrypted file name>.$cf has occurred. Do you want to skip the file?

The window has the options to Skip, Cancel or Retry. Pressing Skip will go to the next file, which if on Disc 1, will bring up the same message. Cancel [obviously] cancels the entire process, and Retry brings up a shorter version of the original error message:

An error reading file <encrypted file name>.$cf has occured. Do you want to skip the file?

So this is where I'm stuck now. What I have figured out is that by looking at the directory tree in Retrieve and comparing it to the encrypted files on the disc using file size and date, I can tell what the directories and file names should be. It would take me forever to go through it this way, but I could at least get some files in the short term and work on the others as time permits. My current question is, pending there is no other solution, can the files be decrypted by some other method or software?

Thanks in advance for any input or suggestions.

Just an update if anyone was looking into this. It appears that just one folder (and its contents) of Disc 1 is corrupted, and it just happens to be the most important folder. I backed up the entire contents of C:\Documents and Settings\<my user ID>, and it seems like everything else decrypted fine except anything in the My Documents folder. If I have Retrieve try to get just the My Documents folder, it tells me that my password is incorrect, and any attempt to put in the password that worked to get Retrieve started in the first place fails. If I include files/folders outside the My Documents folder, it will decrypt the My Documents folder, but all the files inside My Documents are garbage. A definite learning lesson for me. If anyone still has any suggestions, I'm open to them. Thanks again.
