After restarting my system following a software installation, several applications that access the Internet would hang when they accessed the Internet. This included Internet Explorer and the "Check for Updates" function of several programs.

After much troubleshooting and more system restarts than I can count on my hands and feet I was able to eliminate the problem by using msconfig to disable the DiskImageLoader startup item

This leaves me with a number of questions:

1) How do I remove the DiskImageLoader startup item? I looked in Disk Image Loader for a configuration item, but couldn't find one.

2) Why would Disk Image Loader interfere with Internet access by other running programs?

Any help and or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill...

Sounds to me like a security suite such as "Zone Alarm" "Mcafee" or "Norton Internet Security" is the culprit. All of these programs contain features that may be the reason for programs not updating. On the other hand it could be malware or spyware on your computer that is attempting to do something and in the process screwed things up. I use Disc Image Loader pretty extensively and havn't seen or heard of this problem before.

Thanks for your ideas and suggestions, Jimbo.

My McAfee VirusScan was turned off at the time because of the install. I use a hardware firewall and not a software one. email worked fine accessing the Internet and my other system had no problems accessing the Internet so it's not my hardware firewall.

There's no malware, spyware or any other whatever-ware running on my system according to the various scanners I've run.

The simple fact is, if Disk Image Loader is running the problem occurs. It Disk Image Loader is not running my system works fine.

But, you can kill it with MSConfig, so at this point, that may be the solution. Your other option may be uninstalling EMC 8 and doing a custom install, without Disc Image Loader. I have DIL loaded, and use it fairly regularly, and have no internet connection problems. Actually, I was under the impression that if you didn't have any images mounted, then none of the components of Disc Image Loader started.

[Since it's spelled "DiscImageLoader" I'm adding this note so Search will find it with either spelling.]
[And since, as of 19Dec2006, no solution seems to be posted, other than, "then Don't Go There."]

Me, too: Roxio_Central (the Roxio Home icon), nor any of the subordinate apps, nor in many cases even Internet Explorer, all blocked/hung/no window until I kill DiscImageLoader. Wassup Widdat?

I have the same problem. If DiscImageLoader is running, I have problems - not limited to Easy Media Creator 8 -

Easy Media Creator 8 doesn't start (not even a splash screen)
Eudora hangs trying to check e-mail
Kommunikator (tlen.pl) hangs
Symantec Live Update hangs (processes start but never finish)

Once I use task manager to kill DiscImageLoader, the system springs to life.

This only seems to occur if I specify that disc images are to be loaded at startup. If I uncheck that option, the system starts fine.

Since it takes less time to kill the process than to manually load the images when I need them, I'll probably continue doing it this way until there's a permanent fix available.
