Hello, I just purchased this expensive piece of external hardware only to find I cannot locate the files needed to fix this problem. I searched my Win98 cd, as well as the 2 new cd's that came with this package. I tried searching the internet for them and still nothing. I can only guess they are hidden in my win98 cd. I would like to ask for help on getting these drivers needed to fix this. Please help! :)

This is what I get in my device manager:

When the USB cord is connected between the laptop and the external cd burner.

LaCie DVDRW USB

The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28).

When the USB cord is NOT connected between the laptop and the external cd burner.

No problems are indicated until I plug in the burner

I'm not sure but this could be a USB problem. This drive is probably a USB 2.0,not sure since you didn't give the model number.USB 2.0 support isn't available in Windows 98.This could be what is causing the problem. The only thing you could do is upgrade to 2000 or XP

Terry, I disagree with you. I am running Win98 SE, and I have a USB 2.0 card installed.

However, you are right that there is no native support for USB 2.0 in Win98 or Win98 SE.

The OP has bought a drive that is too advanced for the system, is what it comes down to. When I put in a burner, I got it from eBay to make sure it was old enough to work with the system.

My external USB is used mostly for Zip drives and Flash drives.

You're right Lynn, guess I should have been more specific. You can have USB 2.0 if you add a card that has the drivers written by the manufacturer.Like you said ,it's just not supported natively by Windows.I do agree that the drive is just too much for the system as it is.

What happens when I try to reinstall the drivers from within device manager is that it just won't install, I'm stumped. Without being able to install the needed drivers I cannot use it. I need to find out how to get those. Is there some information I would need?

-thanks ^^

What drivers are you trying to install? As Lynn states you need to have a third party USB 2.0 card to get support for Win98.It is not native to it so you need an add on to get USB 2.0.

Well, it doesn not say what drivers need to be inslatallled, only this in Device Manager

"LaCie DVDRW USB The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28)."

If you knew what drives exactly that might help possibly? I could probably search for them on my CD's or maybe on the internet. I kow that to get certain files in Win98 some have to be extracted from cab files. This may be why I cannot find what I need, maybe :)

This is the version I have :

Roxio Easy CD And DVD Creator Home 6.2.0.134

What we've been trying to say is that this is a USB 2.0 device.Windows98 does not have support for this in the OS.To get the drive to operate properly you would need to have an add in USB 2.0 card.If you don't have one and it's installed properly the drives not going to work.

AHHH ok, so maybe I should just send this back to the place I bought it from. Is there a way I can find out what kind of card I have?

USB ports are either built onto the motherboard or on an add-on card.If you've never opened the case and added a card chances are the ones you have are on the motherboard. If the computer's as old as the OS then it's pretty much assured that they are USB 1.1 and not 2.0 since 2.0 is a relatively new thing (a couple years).

If you bought the computer with Win98 or Win98 SE, if it has USB drives they are 1.1.

To have USB 2.0 with Win98 or Win98 SE, you need to add a USB card (think sound card, video card) and the assocsiated drivers.

I agree, you should send the drive back unless you want to buy a newer computer to go with it.

Before buying hardware or software, it's a good idea to read the system requirements (assume you need more than they admit) and if you have doubts your system can handle it, it probably can't.

We are volunteers doing this on our own time. Most of us were helped by others to begin with, and we are passing it along.

Roxio employees have a big, fat Roxio logo by their name, and are very rarely seen, especially on the older boards.

NO SIR! Like Lynn says this is a user forum and we're all just a bunch of users. We probably all started the same, asking questions. Then over a period of time, having gotten answers,we try to pass them on as best we can.We don't always have all the answers but between everyone alot of people get helped and hopefully they help others in turn.

The driver which the computer is calling for would be a hardware driver specific to the CD-DVD hardware. Go to the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware for a download of that driver.

USB 2.0 is a software feature of Windows 98 SE. SE means Second Edition. This is an upgrade from the original release of Windows 98, (in 1998). Many computers manufactured before 1998 will run the program -- USB 2.0. Although, some computers might still have something wrong with their USB system. Or like my computer. Since I have two USB ports I have a USB Hub. There is some kind of software which is installed to run the hub. I have never had to fiddle with it. The USB hub driver got installed automatically. Either with Wndows 98 or my computer manufacturer download for the Motherboard. You might have to go to the manufacturer of your computer to get an update for the Mobo. (Or maybe bus).

You can determine whether you have Windows 98 SE by looking at the number on Start/Run ---, Settings '''' Control Panel --- System ---- General ---- Mine clearly states it is Second Edition.

Frankly I would not worry much about the USB 2.0 until you got the right USB hardware driver from the manufacturer of the CD-DVD drive.

The upgrade from the original Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE is supposedly a pay for item. If you have only the first version of Windows 98, then you can purchase just the upgrade. I bought a full version. Meaning The CD came with both the entire version of the first Windows 98, and SE already with it. (Perhaps a few other updates as well) While Microsoft will no longer sell any version of Windows 98, you can find some places on the internet which will. I purchased my copy of Windows 98 SE through a private seller on Amazon.com. I was very careful to get the Second Edition because I needed to use the USB 2.0. My local Computer Renaissance guy said that USB 2 was the first version of USB which would reliably work. My goodness. How bad must it be if a piece of Microsoft software is actually reputed to be unstable?

Sorry, Purple Ghost - USB 2.0 is NOT part of Win98 SE, and my favored comuter IS Win98 SE. It's possible to update it with the software that comes with a USB 2.0 card.

It's entirely possible you have a variant, such as HP or Compaq, that has special characteristics that aren't in the standard version.

However, the bottom line is, I think the drive is too new for the computer.

Which leaves getting a different drive, or getting a different computer.

USB 2.0 came out long after Win98SE!!!

No manufacture today is going to bother to write drivers for an OS that has been out of production for 5+ years…

If some work great, otherwise you have reached a point where you will have to update or do without.
