Ok...I'm at my wits end.  I used my Roxio Creator Pro 2010, Convert & Create, to burn 20 DVD's of a slideshow that I had put together for family.  After burning 25 copies and mailing them out to everyone...I learned that though they played fine on my computer & DVD player (separately) people on the receiving end of at least 6 (I haven't heard from everyone yet) were unable to get it to play on either their computers OR their DVD players.  I don't understand this at all, and really am at a loss when they played in my computer, my kids laptops (Windows Media Center) and on my DVD player (Toshiba).  I don't know what operating system or DVD players were tried, but would that matter?  I thought these DVD's should play anywhere if I could get them to play successfully on my devices/computers.  Also...I used the slowest burn speed and closed everything down....they seemed terrific when I tested them.

Thanks in advance for the help.

It might be a book type bit setting issue with the +R media...

You could use -R media or try ImgBurn that defaults +R media to DVD-Rom if your drive will handle it, in the burn..

Or if you burned at a high speed with less than top notch media (Memorex = probably Ritek or CMCmag) and there are errors on the disc's. That you could check with Opti drive control 30 day free trial..

I know I'm out of my league on this, however, why would they play fine on my computer and free-standing DVD player, but give trouble to others?

A DVD drive in a PC is a better reader than some settop players.

I have settop players that won't play +R media without the book type bit set change, others will read the +R.

Try a -R and give it to someone that couldn't play your +R and see if that works.

I had these playing in BOTH my pc and dvd player...but the recipients could get them to play in NEITHER.  So I still don't get it.

Then I would blame the media and what speed it was burned at!

Borrow or try some verbatim -R's, available at Best Buy and the like.

Burn the disc's at 8x than see if those folks can view the disc?

I'm being stupidly unclear....the very discs I sent out played in both my DVD player, but on receipt wouldn't play in the other people's.  I had trouble burning the first discs (jumping etc) so I made my kids watch the discs before we sent them...it was painstaking.  lol.

Thanks,

A

If you want to be a detective and find out the real cause?

Get a defective disc back from one of the folks you sent it to, download Opti Drive Control and run a Disc Quality Check on the disc..

Some stand-alone DVD  players will not play every type of DVD you create. Some prefer a certain make of DVD over others. There are just too many variables to cover every situation.

According to the e-mail you got from your sister -in-law, her computer system is missing the software to play the DVDs using the RealPLayer. Tell her to use the DVD player that came with her computer: Windows Media Player.

BTW, you should be using myDVD (Create DVDs) to burn your DVDs and not Copy & Convert (its not called Convert & Create).

AS CD said, Memorex is a very unreliable brand of media - try Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (JVC) and also burn at a lower speed.

DVD players are fussy - cheap ones use PC style DVD-ROM drives and can handle just about anything - good quality ones have high end drives and are more fussy about what will or will not play. Strange but true

Thanks for all the responses.   And thanks for the correction on the program name.  I'm on my laptop, so I was going from memory.

I did build the slideshow in myDVD, but I wanted to burn more than one at a time, and didn't have the hours it seemed to take to rebuild in between each burn...I can't understand why it doesn't ask to burn another.  So I did the "share" function (to the website) which gave me the option to save as a mpg  which I did to make the both (there were 2) slideshows able to be burned on one disc.  When I saw that I could do more with Copy & Convert, this was appealing to me.  I burned at the 4x (I think that's the slowest...if not whichever is the slowest) speed.  I switched it in the options.

Oh well...I still don't understand why I was given so much trouble, especially when these played on my picky home DVD player (not a cheapie) and on my home computer...I thought I was set.

So basically, what I've learned is you can't burn DVD's for anyone else...because you just don't know if their players will play the same thing as yours.

I do appreciate the help.  A

There is an easy way to make multiple copies of your slideshow using myDVD.

After clicking Burn, uncheck "burn to Disc" and check the box "create image" and then click Burn. The program now creates what is called an image file of what will be on the DVD except that it is a file on your hard drive for the moment. It will have the extension "iso". This file can then be burned to DVDs using the program option Burn Image to Disc. Using this method the lengthy encoding process (what you call rebuild) is run only once instead of every time you burn a DVD. The actual burn using the iso file will only take minutes.

You CAN burn for other people - the thing to observe is never use cheap media - use a good brand and also burn at low speed.

Well, how is it that NONE of the 20 that I sent out are readable elsewhere, but they are on 2 of my DVD players and 2 different computers (at my home)?  I'm defeated.  I tested at least 17 of the 20, and so far I've heard from 7 recipients...and NONE worked. I understand what you're saying about cheap media.....and I have some Verbatim DVD+R's that I can try...but I have no way of predicting whether this will work.  I've made 17 copies that worked fine in 2 DVD players (Toshiba and Sony) and a dell laptop and HP desktop......as I've said...I'm not up for the hours it takes just to have it not work again...especially when I tested them before sending them.

Sorry...I don't mean to take it out on you...but I need to vent somewhere.  I bought the Roxio Creator Pro to share videos and slide shows with family...but it's worthless at this point when there's no test.

Don't blame Roxio Creator 2010 Pro for the problems. If it plays even on one DVD player then the software did its job correctly. The problem then lies with the media used and the DVD players.

How did you make the 20 copies? You cannot simply burn files to a DVD and have them play on DVD players. You have to follow a specific process.

See above.  I did follow a "process."  I used the Copy & Convert function.  I set the speed to 4x...I turned all other programs off on my computer so as not to disrupt the burn.  I just don't understand how the discs are black screen for others, but just fine for me.  I'd understand if one or 2 were no good, but only my one sister inlaw has gotten something that is even readable...everyone else has black screen.

Never mind...thanks for the support.  I guess it was crappy discs (even though they played just fine here).  Maybe the US post corrupted them.  Could they have been de-magnitized or something?  Is that how the discs work?  I thought they were laser burned..but I'm questioning everything now.

The only way the PO has corrupted them would be by breaking them.  I have made hundereds of discs (using good quality media and the ISO file method) and only one person complainted.  It turned out that the person had a very old DVD player and it would not, for some reaso, play -R.  When I sent a +R,then it played properly.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
