Last week I bought a LaCie d2 DVDRW writer from Buy.com. It came with a DVD Utility software which has Easy Media Creator Suite 10 with LightScribe Labeler for Windsors 2000, XP and Vista. The Roxio Creator XE is a version of 10.1.291. As soon as I completed the installation on my Toshiba laptop with Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack 3, it displayed error message such as "Update Manager from InstallShield   An error occurred. Error # -3 Visit http://consumer.installshield.com for more information" I don't know how important this error is, because I still can run the Creator and other application such as MyDVD. But the only problem I see is that when I click on Program Updates from Start menu, this error message will pop out on the screen. Any idea to resolve this problem is greatly appreciate.

Don't click on Updates, there is none for your OEM version.

Here is a quote from Roxio's update page "You must own a valid copy of the full, retail  version of Easy Media  Creator 10. If you did not purchase a retail  copy, this update will not  work for any other version of Easy Media  Creator".

Error #-3 means that your version is not known to the update site. It has not been subscribed there because it is an OEM edition and there are no updates available for it.

It is not an important message. It's just when they cut down the full suite to make the OEM version, they failed to remove the stub which checks for updates. It's untidy but often happens, for example they will often just leave the full help files in an OEM rather than take the time to cut them down to match the reduced capabilities of the OEM version.

If you can't prevent the message as Ogdens and Cdanteek suggest, it's quite safe to just ignore it. :)

I would like to thank you all for providing me good suggestion. I did try to follow Cdanteek's approach to uncheck all programs shown in the Update Setting tab of the Program Update.  But It does not prevent the error message to pop out. It seems like the Roxio installation software has messed up some parameters somewhere in my system. So when I double click on Program Update, it still will display that message. From now on, I think I will follow Brendon's suggestion and just simply ignore it if I want to keep this OEM edition for a while before upgrading to the latest retail version. Thanks again for your help.

When you double-click on Program Update you are manually asking for updates from the update service, and that version of the program isn't signed up to the service, so you get the error.

Cdanteek's suggestions stop this from happening automatically, so you just need to stop doing it manually.  :)

Brendon
