We installed EMC8 about 2 weeks ago and we bruned quite a few data DVD's.   Since yesterday morning we have had a problem burning,  it hangs at the "calculating burn speed" screen.  We did a system restore to before we installed EMC8 and then reinstalled the program and everything worked fine.  Shut the system down overnight and when we booted up this morning we were not able to burn again.
What is going on?

System:
AMD FX62 Dual Core Processor
RAM: MEM 1Gx2|CORSAIR TWIN2X2048-6400C3
Burner: DVD_BURN PLEXTOR|PX-755SA BK R
Operating System: XP Pro SP2
Motherboard: ASUS M2N32-SLI DLX WIFI AM2
Video Card: PNY FX3450

I'm trying to find out where I read (yesterday) that the latest Windows updates caused some problems similar to this.  Have you run the latest Windows Update?
If not then, another program might have made changes.  Any new programs added lately?

Thanks for the reply.

The most recent program installed was Epson printer software,  we reinstalled that as well as EMC8 after the restore and we had it working last night, after a shutdown and restart this morning it stopped working.

Just talked to our tech guy and he said that he already went the Windows update route,  but if you do find that article I would like to see it.

Could it be ASPI problems?

I did try to find it but I read so much stuff (mostly useless junk) and so far, haven't found it.  I don't remember it offering any helpful suggestions though.

Not really.  With Roxio it may not be a problem, but with Nero, it is.  And, it was a huge problem, if you used a program such as DVD XCOPY Platinum. :)

Supposedly, XP does not need an ASPI layer.  Not accurate at all.  The only thing accurate is XP does not install an ASPI layer, but some programs don't function well, or at all, without one.

I have ForceASPI 1.8 installed, but it is tough to find a link to it, now.

Okay Thanks for the replys.

Turns out is was the Windows Update that was breaking the chipset drivers.  Everything seems to be working fine now.

Thanks

It's getting worse it seems.  I think all the updating is to fool everyone to go out and install Vista when it's available.  Updates should not break a system it was designed to protect.  I am getting disgusted with all the update crap that's shoved at us.
By the way, I still can't find that info I was looking for that mentioned what the updates did to their system but I do know it was not the most recent set of updates but the one previous to that.

If you are having problems with Nero, DVD XCOPY, etc., you should take that up with them.

Notice the complete lack of ASPI problems/solutions with Roxio products starting with V6??? Must be something they are doing right!

Agree James with the no ASPI problems. In fact I haven't used ForceASPI since a W98 machine.

Bruce I hate to disagree here, but I run Roxio 7.5 and Nero 7 Ultra on a machine fine with the below!

Have never had a ASPI issue, it is XP SP2.

I am not having a problem with any program.  I installed the ForceASPI about 2 years ago.  I sometimes wonder if the problems that some are having with EMC 8 are actually ASPI related.  There were some in Version 7, and I posted the link to the 1.8 ASPI, and it cured a number of folks's problems.

I have not brought it up in some time, because I can't find a link to it anymore.  Only the 1.7, which did not solve the problems some had.  The symptoms are the same as what was described 2 years ago, and it wasn't Nero.  It was Roxio software.  Nero installed its own ASPI layer, and it had problems.

Neither have I, with Roxio software, but some have needed an ASPI fix to make it work.  Read my response to James's post.  It is fine that you disagree, but installing the ForceASPI 1.8, for Version 7.0, worked for more than one of the folks who were having problems with the software communicaing with their burner.  There are certainly no absolutes when it comes to burning software.

Second Nero don't install any ASPI unless you tell it to!

I would say that the book is pretty well closed on ASPI & Roxio but not necessarily sealed… After all we are talking about computers and software.

I don't think it would hurt to suggest ASPI 1.8 to someone Bruce. Remember Radified still has KILL ASPI available! Just suggest they grab that download also.

I do all audio ripping, with Exact Audio Copy with Lame Encoder. EAC is touted that you need a ASPI layer!

Don't need to download it, elsewhere.  Kill ASPI comes as part of the ForceASPI download.

BTW, it is called Force ASPI 1.8, but it is actually something like 1.7.2.....
