I am trying to copy 8mm movies burned to a DVD-R. Every time I attempt to copy the DVD I successfully copy the disc. But when I try to copy it to a blank disc, (DVD+R), I always get the same error dialog box: "Power calibration area error-Medium error" [03/73/03]} . I have no idea what any of this means, but I have checked the DVD's I am trying to copy to and they are all in good working condition. I don't recall whether or not I previously downloaded and installed Service Pack 4, so I am doing that now. But, on the chance that doing so doesn't correct my problem I am hoping that someone out there can help me.

I am running Windows Vista Home 64-bit on an HP a6554f computer with Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz, and 5GB of RAM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I just finished burning 7 copies of the disc---IT WORKED GREAT!!!!!! It never seemed to burn faster then 8.1X. Even though it did work, I would appreciate if you could tell me how I can "throttle back" the burn speed? I have no idea how to do that. I know there must be controls for that somewhere but, since that seems to be more of a hardware issue rather then software, I don't have any idea where to begin.

I guess that old saying "...you get what you pay for" really is true. I don't recall what I paid for the DVD+R discs, and the only name I can find on them is "Platinum" but they sure didn't work very well; although it could simply be the speed that the discs can/are burned at. What ever the reason, it worked and I am very appreciative of the help. Thanks Again!

There are many cases where there is a problem with the disc, or information  cannot be retrieved from the disc properly. The PC may be unstable or try a new  disc.

Borrow and different brand/make of disc for starters.

I tried several different BLANK DVD's, but none of them worked. I guess I could go buy a new pack of DVD-+R's, but that really seems like a waste without any assurance that this is the problem. (I have used these DVD's for other things.)

If different brands of disc are all failing, you could have a faulty drive (that error code is from the drive itself saying it can't read the calibration track)

Find the drive in device manager under DVD/CD-Rom Drives right click on it and uninstall it, reboot the PC and windows will re-assign the correct drivers, see if it works. If not try different media, got it?

I just bought a small pack of "Verbatim" DVD-R, which is a brand name product.  I will try this before deleting and reinstalling the driver. (I guess I could also contact HP for help, if it's not the disc.)

I just noticed that the DVD+R discs that I was getting the above error message on notes the speed is "1-4X" while the speed on the new DVD-R discs I just bought today is "16". I believe my CD/DVD drive can record at the higher speed. On the front of housing it says "LightScribe DVD SuperMulti Drive / CD-Writer." I know that it will write both CD's & DVD's because I have used both in the past.

Glad it wasn't the drive itself.

It's probably an 8x drive for writing which is why that's the speed you get. To change that, check the options in the burning program before you actually tell it to start and there should be a drop down menu there to lower the speed (two of them actually - one for CD and one for DVD)
