The only problem I had before was choppy playback in preview... I suppose I should have been happy with that. But instead I downloaded the latest driver for my video card and now I don't even get a preview window at all!

Any ideas? Can I uninstall the new driver??

Update: if I switch to render w/ software it seems to work.

A couple of ways..you can try a roll back or you can download an older driver. It is rare that an updated driver is the cause of your problem.  Might be a corrupted install.

I feel kinda dumb asking this, but... how do you rollback a video driver? I know how to do it for keyboard & a couple of others but not this. Thanks!

In the Device Manager in System Properties, open your video device, click on the driver tab and choose the Rollback driver tab.

Sounds like a fairly good indication that it SHOULD be on software.  Did you run the graphics test after installing the new driver? Did the 'button' default to software?  Forcing it to hardware is not a good idea. If your video card does not support the 3D functions, it could definitely cause rendering to freeze and lockup the comptuer.

I did the rollback and now my preview screen works again. I think I'm going to finish the current project with the configuration as is (since my only real problem is the occasional choppiness in preview), then address the driver issue later. Fingers crossed...

I'm curious Kevin if you get that "choppiness" in previewing your video, if you get that same kind of situation once you have burned it to DVD and played it . I observed one of my video productions once where I noticed a slight bit of what you call "choppines" but after I had completed all my editing and burned it to a DVD, it played fine. To this day I have no idea what might have caused that bit of irregularity in the preview.

I'd be curious to know the model of that video card and the driver version.

Frank,

In the past, I have not seen the chopiness once it's burned to DVD -- it's just annoying to deal with when trying to get through the editing.

Terry,

The current card is NVIDIA GeFORCE2 MX/MX 400. Not sure what the new one was that I loaded.

That video card does not support all of the features of DirectX needed for the software.  The newest download may not have worked, because your card may not have been supporte.  The last NVidia card that I had was the GeForce 2.  I have had ATI cards since the NVidia video driver debacle back in the GeForce 2 days.

The reason I asked is because I have seen a couple things lately questioning the newest drivers from NVidia. The version in question is 91.31.Seems there could be various problems popping up from this release. If those are the ones you are using you might try rolling back to a previous version like Paul stated.

I believe that card was designed for DirectX 6 or 7 so it will never fully support DirectX 9. Updated drivers can only be DirectX 9 'compatible'.  I couldn't find a manufacturing date, but Tom's Hardware at a review in Sep 2000. If you're entire computer is this old, you will find editing video very slow and choppy.

To continue using this video card, I would suggest leaving it set at software rendering all the time.
