Hi guys

I'm becoming very frustrated, not to say extremely worried.

I've been using Creator Classic within Creator 2009 to create data discs of images from photoshoots. Shooting an all day wedding, or all day in a nursery creates a lot of data, and the concept of being to burn a job to a set of discs has been great.

But .... incresingly, when I go back to recover files, I ma having problems with the discs not opening properly in my PC.

For example, with the current problem, I can put disk 4 of 4 in the drive (that's just the order in which I picked up the bundle of disks), it's recognised, and I can get Roxio Retrieve to begin it's job, it asks me to put disk 1 in the drive ... and then everyhting stops .... after an age, the contents of the disk might become visible, but I can't do anything with them. What I am actually after is one file from disc 2, but the same thing happens if I put disk in the drive .. nothing but eventually after many minutes (5 - 10 or more) I can begin to see whats on the disc, but I can't select, copy the one I want. Windows Explorer also becomes very upset whenever I have disc like this in the drive.

Some projects are fine - Retrive opens and does its job, but others behave like this and I am terrified that one day I will not be able to retrieve the data I need.

I'm running Windows 7, using an Asus DVD rewriter; many oif these disks would have been created on this machine when it was running XP Pro,and I did have some of the same problems then, but it's now happened one time too many, and I need some help - I have a customer waiting for a canvas wrap and can't get the file off the disk.

Your problem is right here: "I'm running Windows 7"

Apart from the fact that disc spanning isn't a good idea, Creator 2009 is NOT certified for Windows 7. YThe first suite to be so certified was Creator 2010.

Creator 2009 may work for a while and give the impression it's fine - but it will fail

But I have had the same problem under XP Pro!!

Can anyone suggest any solutions - I must admit I am disappointed that this solution doesn't seem to work as well Roxio claimed - I have used it to back up valuable files, that insome instances I am now having issues retrieving - I do no longer back up my files this way, preferring now to use external hard drives.

Well, Roxio support are suggesting I spend money buying additional products - I am totally outraged - this softwear was sold to me as an ideal solution to the problem of safely, quickly and efficiently backing up my image files - coming home from a wedding with say 20GB worth of work, this disc spanning method seemed ideal.

Now the company is saying to me that it's not a recommended way of working!!!

FFS - how are they getting away with this??

I'm in a position now where I have no idea if I am going to be able to retrieve my data ... I've widely recommended this product in the past, but no longer ....

You voluntarily upgraded to Windows 7. If you'd checked here or even on the Microsoft site you would have been told that Creator 2009 was NOT certified.

Disc spanning was NEVER a good idea at any time. It just takes one disc to be scratched, corrupted or any other minor problem and the whole set becomes useless.

This not a specific Roxio problem - it applies to any disc spanning software

I trusted what Roxio told me about Creator 2009; I had no reason to suspect that spanning was not a good strategy.

And are you really saying that because I burned DVDs several years ago, then I shouldn't upgrade my OS - I'm not talking about trying to use Creator 2009 now to burn new projects, I am talking about trying to retrieve data from several years ago, burned using 2009 and what came before that - I've been using Roxio products since around 2003/4 I think.

And yes, things do change, and the old isn't always compatible with the new, but I am so disappointed with Roxio's attitude towards helping me out here - I've trusted their product, I believed what they told me - if they'd given me an indication then that spanning was not a good strategy, there is no way I would've used it - in fact I think when I first invested in Roxio, they were the only company offering any product like this.
