I see I have a process running called CPSHelpRunner.exe that appears to have come from my EMC8 installation. Anyone have any idea what exactly this does? Trying to figure out if I need it or not.

Some sites I googled show it as a possible virus but PestPatrol has some info

I believe this is part of the Roxio PhotoSuite help application. It gets loaded when you launch PhotoSuite and should disappear when you close Photosuite

Well, that's not what's happening. I didn't launch anything from EMC, but it was running as soon as my PC booted up. It doesn't appear to go away.

I found the file and looked at the properties.It definately has to do with Photo Suite and Roxio.Why it starts on boot I'm not sure but my computer has it as a running task also.

Well, I dug around in the registry and msconfig tonight and can't see what is starting this thing up. It's not in the startup programs or in the services. I searched the registry for it, and the only key I found was:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\5BE2129D60D833841B314C230C481C51

It also showed up here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDlls

I have no idea what the above keys do, but maybe someone here will have an idea.

It is not a virus. At least for EMC 7.5 it is found in folder

\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\SharedCom

Also if you look in the details tab of the About option it is also listed there. When I start Photosuite it gets loaded and disappears again when I exit Photosuite.

What it does in EMC 8 I can't tell at the moment since I don't have it installed currently.

It's definitely NOT a virus Bruce. As was suggested it is a ROXIO file that runs with PhotoSuite. In version 7.1.1.189 it shows in the following place folders:

C:\Windows\Prefetch
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\SharedCOM

I tried seeing what would happen when I opened PhotoSuite in version 7 and then checked all of the processes that were running on the computer and I couldn't find anywhere the file was running. I also checked later to see if it was starting up and not being detected in the Startup folder and it wasn't.

I'm running a PC Mag program called "StartCop" and it detects any program that is running upon bootup, even if it doesn't show up when you run MSCONFIG or check in the Startup folder. (Some programs do this and if you have no way of checking other than the startup folder or running msconfig, you will never know.

My suggestion is to leave the file intact as it is a legitimate Roxio file for PhotoSuite and continue to try and find out why it is running at bootup.

Just did a little more detective work chasing down the file CPShelpRunner.exe. Checking at the following web site:

http://pcpitstop.com...t.asp?pg=5&st=0

The file is listed on their list in BLUE color, meaning it's really not a file that is required. However when you click on the file name on the list it does give you the entire information about the file. They also show it as a Roxio file associated with Photosuite and is a file required when running HELP from the menu.

Suggestion Gary:

Do a search from (START--SEARCH) and make sure all of your HD's are listed as to where you want to search and enter that file name. Then go to each of the locations and rename the file by just placing a couple of X's at the beginning of the original file name. Then reboot the computer and see if it's still running.
That file shouldn't be running even if you use the Roxio PhotoSuite program. That file is an internal program file that is initiated from the program itself when you click on HELP when in the program. If you don't ever plan on needing the help files for PhotoSuite, it is not necessary to have that file on your computer.

Either way, the file really doesn't take up hardly any of the computer's resources even if it is running.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\SharedCom
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\SharedCOM8

Also:

I tried deleting the file in the prefetch directory and rebooting, but CPSHelprunner was still running after the reboot. I don't see anything about that should cause the file to run on startup, so I searched the registry for it and found the following keys:

CPSHelprunner.exe is launched by both EMC 7.5 and EMC 8. As soon as I quit EMC, the programs also terminates. If you rename it and launch EMC 7.5, the Windows Installer pops up and tries to install(repair?).

Unfortunately for me, it's running as soon as my computer starts up and never ends. I have version 6, 7.5 and 8 installed, but never saw it running until EMC8 was installed.

With EMC 8, CPSHelprunner is not shown in task manager, process tab, unless I open photosuite, when it appears. Closing photosuite it disappears again from task manager.
XP home SP2 all updates, EMC 801B16A ENU. (UK retail version)

Tonight when I get home I'm going to open Photosuite and then close it again and see if that gets it to go away...maybe it's that simple. Could be Photosuite crashed last time I was using it and this thing is waiting for it to close correctly so it can go back to sleep. I'll post back with results.

Cpshelprunner is absolutely part of our app... I have a rough understanding of how it works but let me find out in more detail and I'll post back

Thanks Patrick. Last night I started Photosuite and checked my running processes and there were two listings for CPSHelpRunner.exe (one that was there after booting up and the second one that started when I ran Photosuite). When I exited Photosuite the second one went away, but the first one stayed and never ended.

I had this exact problem, Gary, and it's how I found this website and thread. I read everything and it's not a virus, as it was pointed out in earlier threads. You should check and see if you have an icon in your system tray area called "Media Manger Services". It'll likely be hidden because of inactivity. (Make sure the Roxio quick disc thing is also closed) If you right click on it and choose to close the icon for this service until your next reboot the CPShelprunner.exe will go away.

I'm in no way as technically advanced as the others here, but that's what worked for me. Hope it helps.
