the only place I can get the scene detection is in media manager. I have tried unistalling and reinstalling emc8 and no change.

That is correct.  You can only do scene detection in the Media Selector.  That's how it was in V7, too. Just that the 'Media Selector' is now a separate 'window'.

From Media Selector, just click and drag a scene to the Timeline or Storyboard.  If you have moved the file since you did the scene detect, you may get the error message that the file can not be found.

I get to this point, but when I try to drag the scenes to the storyboard, nothing happens.  I did rename the avi files, but it was before I did the autodetect on the scences. I have the full retail EMC 8, but I don't seem to have whatever verison has the manual scene selection, could this be my problem?

Which version?  There was an Essentials version, but I have no idea if this feature was not included with that.

Make sure you are using the MEDIA SELECTOR as shown in my screenshot.  It is not the same one as when you click 'Add Video/Image'.

I'm not using "Essentials" , my screen looks just eactly like yours, but when I drag the scene down to the timeline, by clicking and holding with the left mouse button, I get an insert "bar" (I'd guess you'd call it) on the timeline, but when I release the left mouse button, nothing happens........

That's why I was emphasizing MEDIA SELECTOR.  When you click on Add Video/Image, it does indeed LOOK EXACTLY like my screen shot, but it won't work.
