I bought this product based on this piece of marketing collateral expecting accelerated AVC encoding using Intels new integrated GPU hardware encoding function (Quick Sync) on the Sandy Bridge processors. In my case an i7 2600k. In my testing it doesn't appear to be using the iGPU hardware because the encodes take about as long as an average software encoder and the 8 virtual CPUs are pegged at close to 100%. Other products that support Quick Sync take about 1/4 as long and the CPUs average < 20%. I don't see any setting that would enable this hardware support. I've downloaded and applied the updates. I also notice in the "About" box that all the software files associated with product have dates (latest 12/2009) that are earlier than the release (2/2011) of the Sandy Bridge processors. I realize that this brochure is from Intel, but I can't imagine that Intel would fabricate a product on Rovi's behalf. Does anyone know if there is a later release of this?

Rael,

What software do you actually have? Would you please go to Help > About this software and post the software name, version and build numbers [but not the serial number] that are displayed there?

The PDF you point to refers to a stand-alone version of the latest Video Copy & Convert containing Intel's Media SDK 2.0, as contained in the latest Roxio Creator 2011 [with this year's new version due along soon, if previous years can be relied on].

From your description, I wonder if you have instead bought one of the cheap reduced-function versions with very similar and confusing names such as "Easy Video Copy & Convert", which are actually just earlier versions modified to run under Windows 7.

The full name, version and build numbers will tell us.

Hi Bredon,

Here is a link to roxio's website for what I purchased.

The documentation that came with the product said:

"BONUS: You've been Upgraded!
Congratulations! You have been selected to receive a free product upgrade to Roxio Easy DVD Copy Premier, which contains the full version of the product you purchased: Roxio Easy Video Copy & Convert."

Help > About Video Copy & Convert

Roxio Easy DVD Copy Premier (Build 122B04A ENU)

The Intel brochure I referenced in the original post says:

"Roxio Video Copy & Convert* (VCC) is a standalone transcoding application that makes it easy for users to import videos into their computer and then quickly convert them for viewing on smart- phones, tablets, and other mobile devices."

The above link was the only "standalone" version of "Video Copy & Covert" on Roxio's website. The user interface is identical to what's shown in the brochure. The pricing is similar to other competitive products (Cyberlink MediaEspresso). If I bought the wrong standalone version "Easy Video Copy & Covert" vs "Video Copy & Covert". Where do I buy the correct standalone version? Confusing to say the least.

Rael,

You don't seem to have got the software you were after. It's very difficult to work out just what you have been sent, so I have sent out a Help request to a very helpful Roxio man.

I hope he will be able to join us here after the weekend and straighten up the confusion.

Regards,
Brendon

Hi Brendon,

Thanks for your help. I look forward to Roxio's support.

I think what has happened is Roxio has bundled several of their products together to try to reduce the number of supported products. Video Copy & Convert is one of several bundled products with my downloaded purchase even though I thought I was only purchasing a standalone version of Video Copy & Convert. When I select Help > About Video Copy & Convert within the standalone application I get information about the bundle (Roxio Easy DVD Copy Premier (Build 122B04A ENU) and not information about the standalone version of Video Copy & Convert.

Hi Brendon,

Any word from your contact at Rovi? I'm going to request a refund unless I get what I thought I was getting.

Hi Rael,

I'm afraid I've had no response yet. :(

Roxio will refund if you bought the software direct from them and you request the refund within 30 days. If you're approaching that time it might pay you to request the refund while you can.

Hi Bredon,

I ended up requesting a refund. I found some tools that come with Intels Quick Sync 2.0 SDK to perform my testing. That along with some other public domain tools allowed me to do pretty much what I need to encode raw streams, transcode elemental h.264 streams and mux (with audio) into containers I need. No GUI though. I appreciate your willingness to get involved. Rovi/Roxio should get their act together. I've been a customer for a long time. Using products like Toast for many years. I would have preferred to buy this from them. IMO, GPU based encoding/transcoding is the future.

Rael,

They may well have the stand-alone VCC that you want, available for sale. However even though I follow Roxio software avidly as a hobby, I have not been able to find my way through the maze of new, old, mixed, and repackaged suites to find the one you want.

The Roxio representative I PMed on this has not answered. He might not know the answer either, or perhaps he's busy on other work.
