I've just spent like 5 hours editing a hour and a half hour video, now, about 2 mins from finishing, videowave has stopped responding and i haven't saved it. Is there anything i can do to either get it to work again, or save my work? If i close it off then all that effort has gone down the drain :( Or is there a way to get my work back if i close it without saving? I will be so gutted if i lose it

Videowave does appear to 'hang' round the 99% mark (while it finishes off the rendering). Go have a coffee and come back to it.

But - bear in mind that a standard DVD will only hold about 1 hour's video at best quality

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

You can try opening your production again, but I would bet that everything you did, in that 5 hour period, is gone.

Save, and save often.

Also clear the proxy files frequently while you are editing.  It may be that the folder location for the proxy files filled up and nothing was saved.  Clear proxy file by go to the top menu/tools/options/ clear proxy files.

How often do you do maintenance on your computer?  Get rid of junk files and defrag.  How much free space do you have on your hard drive?
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
