I saved my project as an iso, then burned a test disc. It played fine. I need to burn about 30 copies. I burned another one, which also played fine, etc. Then I randomly checked another disc in the stack and it would not read in my set top player or laptop. I checked the whole stack and found that every third or fourth one cae up blank/unreadable.

I can't believe there were that many "dud" discs in the stack. I've tried using BURN IMAGE and DISC COPIER. Is there something I should be looking out for?

Believe it. What brand of media are you using?

Also, don't burn at the highest speed possible as that can result in errors on the disc(s) also. A good brand of discs burned at a moderate rate should be good.

I burned 48 copies of an ISO to Verbatim DVD+R's at 4x speed about a month back and had no problems with any of them.

I'm using Fuji DVD-R's, which have always worked great for me in the past. Burning at 4x speed.

I just made another good copy via Disc Copier, then started another one. The burner started, then showed .1x speed before the whole thing crashed.

Fuji has starting making discs outside of Japan (Taiwan, I think). They are not very good. The manufacturing location is on the package so the next time you buy discs ....

The last Fuji I identified were Prodisc Media.

Companies like Memorex, Fuji, and Imation all outsource to media vendors!

It is the media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc manufacturer.

To learn the media ID code, a blank disc must be put in a DVD burner drive and the ID read by a special utility. There are a handful of freeware or trialware tools available.

For Windows Nero CDDVDSpeed, DVD Identifier, DVDInfoPro.
For Macintosh OS X DVD Media Inspector

The best DVD recordable media is, Taiyo Yuden made in Japan. Available online, two etailers I trust are Supermediastore.com and Rima.com.

I'm still stunned that there could be 50% bad blanks in a stack.

One problem is, I need discs with a blank surface for printing and I have only seen a handful of manufacturers on store shelves. I have to finish the ASAP so I can't order online.

We all are but it happens! I had it happen with Verbatim, another poster just had it happen with Sony disc's. http://forums.suppor...?showtopic=7596

In that post the Identifier tool showed the problem and usually does!

Have you used it?

Check the disc's in DVDInfo Pro to identify the maker and write descriptors!

Verbatim sells those disc's and are available at Best Buy, Sam's Club, and similar stores.

The drive is made by Pacific Digital, not Toshiba. Can bad blank discs really cause the drive/system to lock up & need a restart???

Toshiba entered the 16X DVD market, although with a slight delay, releasing its latest model the SD-R5372.
The brand new drive supports 16X recording for the DVD+R and DVD-R formats, 5X DVD+R DL, 48X CD-R and 24X US-RW.

Toshiba makes drives, Pacific Digital buys drives from drive makers
and rebags them in there packaging for resale.

It hasn't for me but who knows!

The highest Write Speed Descriptor is 6x, we have a disc problem.

RITEK has been Garbage since the RITEK G04 days!

The Fuji package says 1x to 16x. What's happened with the last few burns is, the drive will go from 4x to 3x to 2x to 1x, back and forth -- obviously the result is unplayable.

I thought the DVD drive was ready for the garbage heap, but if it's most likely a matter of crappy discs I will be relieved!

Again, I need discs with a blank surface for laser printing, which eliminates Verbatim. I will try Sony/Maxell/TDK and hope for the best.

One more thing: the package needs to be opened to get those stats from DVDID, which then means the discs can't be returned. That seems like a gamble every time.

I searched the Toshiba site, your firmware is [FW TU53]
The TU55 is avaliable. I don't think it will help the Ritek problem!
It's a hard site to navigate and didn't find firmware flashing instructions!
