I’m running EMC8 Deluxe Suite.  

I’m PC-based & trying to send video files internationally to someone who has a Mac. *Lots* of fun.

The problem is, I’ve rendered both Generic MPEG2 Good Quality, and DV Format AVI.  The rendering seems to go okay.  

The DV Format AVI files play fine.  The Generic MPEG2 Good Quality files won’t play in either QuickTime or WMP 11.  Questions as follows:

1.  Why I can’t play my MPEG2 files?  Is it the player(s), or a rendering issue known in EMC8 Deluxe?  How to correct (there aren’t any updates for EMC8 Deluxe, as several forum members corroborated recently)?

2.  Out of the choices below, what would be the best file type to choose in the EMC8 pulldown menu for someone using a QuickTime on a Mac?  

3. I tried a Generic MPEG1 Normal Quality & wasn’t satisfied with the quality.  Would MPEG1 for Video CD play in a Mac running QuickTime, and would the quality be any better that Generic MPEG1?  I didn’t want to waste time burning if someone could shoot me a quick answer…

According to Apple the file formats supported by QuickTime are:

· QuickTime Movie (.mov)
· MPEG-4 (.mp4, .m4v)
· MPEG-2 (OS X Lion only)
· MPEG-1
· 3GPP
· 3GPP2
· AVI
· DV

I was going to send DV Format AVI, Generic AVI Normal Size, & a (crappy!) MPEG1 Generic.  Maybe also MPEG1 for Video CD.  Would that about cover it?  Out of these, which would be the best quality for viewing?  Guessing AVI formats would be no different, and superior to either MPEG1 format...  Corroboration would be nice.

How are you sending the files?   What output formats are you allowed with EMC 8?

mpg1 are cd quality - pretty crappy.

Download and run VLC (free) video player and put that mpg2 file in it to view.  Does it play?  If not, there is an issue with the files.

QuickTime will not play a mpg2 file (except for the newest versions of their OS).  What does your frined have?

Have you considered uploading the files to something like YouTube and having your friend get them from there?  You can make it private.

sknis, thanks for the info.  I did indeed just download the VLC player and the MPEG2s played fine.  This is good to know, and I'm grateful for the many hours of brain sweat you just saved me.

If anyone has any thoughts on the Mac format question, please let me know.  One down, one to go...

Just posted to this but it has disappeared, hopefully it won't reappear twice...  I'm sending by USB drive, YouTube isn't an option due to copyright.

EMC8 limits to either MPEG1s or versions of AVI.  The other EMC8 outputs apparently aren't supported by Apple.

I'm thinking DV Format AVI or AVI Generic are the way to go.  I don't think my friend has the newest OS & can't support MPEG2...

Anyone want to second the motion?  Debate is on the floor.

Your probably running XP and needed a DVD Decoder.

If it is a copyright issue on you tube it's still a copyright issue putting it on a USB drive and distributing it!

For all non copyright material I would send it the way you want and let your friend with the mac figure it out.

I'm sorry, but while I appreciate your info, this is veering away from my second question, which is what is the best file format in EMC8 to use for someone with a Mac?

File transportation is a non-issue, really.  At this point it's entirely a matter of *what* to send, not how to send.

I am not and never have been a Mac user, so I know very little about compatible formats.

This work isn't something I can upload anywhere on the web.  The copyright holder I'm working with does not want anything released there at present.

Mac's have DVD Players and Burners don't they?

The DVD-Video ( Digital Video ) standard uses MPEG-2 video.

This is the only patch that I found. I have no clue if it works with the EMC 8 Deluxe Suite.

For the sake of anyone interested in the question of what to output for Macs, of the formats offered in EMC8, I decided to provide both AVI formats, DV Format AVI and AVI Generic, and both MPEG1 formats offered as well despite a significant quality difference.
