I have tried audacity along with free audio recorder and others the drawback is when i import then into itunes i have to reenter the album information, track sequence and tags

The question you have to ask yourself is if you intend at any stage to use other than the limited capability of that in the future (in which case it would be better going for the full-blown suite)

i was looking at that but i dont like the idea of another piece of hardware when i was able to go through my sound card before. going back to the original question has the functionality and features changed from the version put out when windows xp was the latest windows version?
