I take photos using a 10 megapixel Sony A100 DSLR.  Yesterday I built a project in Videowave then transferred it to MyDVD and produced a BluRay 16:9 movie.  I went back to Videowave loaded the same project then transferred it to MyDVD and burned a standard 16:9 DVD.  Now my problem.  I cannot detect a resolution difference when either disc is played on my bluray player to a 1080p Vizio 42" TV.  They are both beautiful, but I am wondering if I am doing something wrong and might possibly improve the resolution on the bluray disc. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.  Thank you

What is MyDVD? As for checking the encoding resolution with Toast you can do this by looking into the Roxio Converted Items folder during the encoding where the file name will include the resolution. You also should be able to see the resolution by dragging the burned video back into the Toast window or by holding the cursor over it after selecting it in the Toast Media Browser. Obviously the file sizes would be different, too.

I've been struggling with making blu-ray dvds that have the resolution I expected. I've been totally lost until this thread.  I built a project in videowave then exported it to mydvd blu-ray. I then took the same project and exported it again to mydvd but wanted a standard dvd.  When I viewed them using a blu-ray player to a 1080p hdtv they looked exactly the same.  After reading this thread I exported the same project to mydvd but decided to do AVCHD on a standard dvd.  I was wowed by the improved resolution over the blu-ray project.  I'm going to keep an eye on this thread, and hope for an answer about the blu-ray productions.  Thank you

But what you are describing is not even possible  

Some facts for thought.

Your camera is taking pictures at 3872 X 2592, assuming you set it to ’L’. Even at its’ LOWEST POSSIBLE setting it still taks pictures at 1920 X 1280 (‘S’).

Now the 1920 X 1080 is a number to keep in mind as NO TV can display more and NO BD Player can output anything higher

Assuming you set your 3 MyDVD projects to HQ, you would get:

BD = 1920 X 1080 @ 15mbps
AVCHD = 1920 x 1080 @ 15 mbps
DVD = 720 X 480 @ 9 mbps

In order for your TV to display anything above DVD Quality, it must be connected with an HDMI cable to your BD Player

I duplicated your projects with some 4928 X 3264 pictures and ran them on my BD player…

The results were just as expected…

The BD & AVCHD were equal!

The DVD was greatly reduced in quality.

No DVD will ever be equal to BD or AVCHD even if they are set to their lowest quality settings  

But you have to keep an eye on what Quality Setting you are using in MyDVD as its' default is "Fit to Disc" which is the worst on you can use!

You are correct I did post the first question, by mistake, in the toast forum.  Sorry for that.  I must be screwing up my settings.  I may have made the first bd using "fit to disc"  or it could just be my old eyes.  I am connected by hdmi so that should not be a problem.  I'll try it on bd again today.  Thanks for the feedback and happy thanksgiving

Keep a close eye on that little Drop Box in the lower pane

One other thing to keep in mind even though you did not do this in this case...

IF you do an Export As from VideoWave, always make sure you are maintaining the same Quality of your Source If you inadvertentlytantly lower it, it can be a problem in MyDVD.

Thanks everybody, everything is well.  I burned the project to blu-ray with the setting at hq, and got the results I expected.  Very nice high definition photos.  I wish that drop down box at the bottom called out the resolution like it does for AVCHD.  At least I now know what went wrong with my first production.  I will be careful with the resolutions while saving to other formats.  thanks
