Drive Reported An Error: Sense Key = Medium Error

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I'm a new popcorn 4 user, have found it's the only program (I tried Burn, DVD2onex, disk utility) that will produce a playable copy of a VIDEO_TS folder I have, it's worked for 3 different disks. I regularly get the below error.
I'm using Popcorn 4.0.2 on OSX 10.6.8, have a Matshita DVD+-RW UJ-857G drive I replaced 2 year ago because the factory one died, using a MBP (previous all-chrome generation). I'm using Verbatim DVD+R DL 8X and 2.4X varieties. I tried burning at 4X then 2X speeds and "Best". I can't disable the Underrun Protection - that option becomes greyed out.
I get the following error:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
It happens when it's in the "Preparing..." phase, I get the window 4 times, then:
The disc failed to be written
I'll get this for about 2 to 3 discs in a row, replacing each one, then it'll actually take and burn, sometimes successfully, other times I'll get this error in the middle of the burn and I get a coaster (that plays in a player but not starts in a random chapter, and the disc is incomplete). At least when Popcorn rejects the disk at the outset it's not yet altered or burned.
Any ideas on how to improve the reliability of this? As I write I replaced a disk then another and...now...it looks like it's successfully writing again.
Could it really be that my Verbatim disks only work 25-33% of the time??? These seem to be the best rated for DL disks and macs. Many thanks!
