I'm getting the error "Couldn't complete the last command because there was an I/O error (your disc may be copy-protected) Result Code = -36" every time I try to write to a BD-RE disc. Normal BD-Rs work but rewritables don't. This is a completely new phenomenon and I have previously burned BD-REs with this burner and program. Don't know what to do.

Puzzling. I suggest trashing the Toast plist and prefs files in your User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunching Toast. Maybe it is caused by a corrupt preferences file. Which version of OS X are you running?
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!
